Timing Chain Questions

Have been chasing a new timing chain/gears for the 230 Industrial engine I have.......the original chain & gears I have are 9/16th in width and don't have the groove in the center of the gear teeth. I have seen pics of chains/gears that have a "groove" in the center of both the cam/crank gear teeth & assumed they were different to my engines setup. I have just received a chain that I bought over ebay, that appeared to be correct......it was listed for a 230 car engine......it has the correct number of teeth, the chain sits on the gears correctly BUT its too wide........its 3/4" wide and would no way work as the chain would be "walking" backwards & forwards on the gears...........so there appears to be at least 3 types of chains/gear sets........ie, 2 different width chains & gears 9/16 & 3/4 wide and another set that have a centering groove but width unknown.........question.........does anybody have any DEFINATE info on what chains fit what?............lol.........thanks, andyd

Andy, I am certainly no expert on this, but from looking at Bernbaums site it appears there are two different gear/chain sets based on the year. 34 to 55 and 56 to 59. VPW also has two different ones but one set is marked for the 251 engine 60 and up. Now both picture gears that are grooved but it appears there are quite possibly 3 different sets as you suspect. The old set (34-55), the later set(56-59) and the latest big block set (60 and up). Unfortunately I have no idea which is which. Maybe the wide one is the big engine version and the groove / non-groove are the difference in the year sets? I don't know, LOL, and I hope this doesn't add to the confusion............Tim

Tim & Neil, thanks......yeh its strange that there doesn't appear to be an easy answer, or at least a way to tell what was used, I haven't pulled the 201 in the 41 Plymouth Coupe to check what it has and I have no way of telling for certain what year or how exactly the 230 engine I have compares to a car/truck engine.......as mentioned it is an industrial engine, supposedly from a Sydney airport tug, well thats what i was told by the engines' PO & it does have the Industrial engine tag on the block and the bore is correct for a 230, but as an example, it has the little oil feeder tube that squirts oil onto the chain, but from what I can work out this feature was not on the 230's......lol......so who knows what timing set apart from a complete "matched" set is correct........lol...........ain't cars fun??.................andyd

My 230 has the squirter tube. The engine is marked 3 5 1955 at the bottom of the block between the dizzy and the oil fill tube . Anyone else have one?

I thought the bore ws the same on the 218 and 230 the stroke was different.

Al, thanks for the reply, the only numbers cast into the block between the dissy & oil filler tube on the 230 block I have are CWC 3 B250 with 67 above them......maybe its a 1967 block?............no idea........lol...........andyd

Check on ebay for that guy moparkenan in Istanbul Turkey. I recall in the past he had a couple of different chains and gears. As in, possibly with and without groove and such. An email to him may be worth your time. That guy has always got a bunch of old mopar stuff for sale. Makes you wonder what all he really has out there Turkey.

Rustyzman, thats who I got the chain from, as it was only $15.00 & shipping was $20 its not worth sending it back as it was exactly as described, packed well etc, so not his fault.......haven't asked him about a narrower one yet........hhmm........will follow this up......andyd

Andy,

I don't know if this helps, but I just measured the diameters of the old chain and gear from my re-build. The chain's ID was 13/16" and the gear's OD was 3/4". That leaves 1/16" wiggle room.

Neither the chain nor either gear look terribly worn to me. Let me know if you want any of them.

btw... The chain and gears are from a 230 and that engine has an oil squirt tube for the chain.

Jim, thanks for the offer but I'll see what i can turn up here in Oz, the thing is the 230 I have has the thin, 9/16th wide gears & chain which I thought, until your post, must have been the "standard" width but now you say you have a 230 with the wide chain/gears.............lol.........its crazy!!.......lol........will see what I can do here, might be able to swap the new wide chain for a new thin chain.........am in no real hurry but its one thing I'd like to sort out sooner rather than later.........lol................andyd
