41/53dodges Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 what exactly are these? i know cam timing gears/sprockets, but what? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth-DeSoto-flathead-6-timing-gears-/380284361376?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588ab6daa0 Quote
Young Ed Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Some heavy duty engines have a gear driven cam instead of chain driven. Dads 220 SD IHC motor has that setup. Never seen a mopar flathead with one though. Quote
41/53dodges Posted November 4, 2010 Author Report Posted November 4, 2010 so then, theorhetically, wouldnt that take a different cam? either that or it would run backwards. Quote
razerface Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 i think there is supposed to be an idler gear in there,,,which makes top and bottom gear run same direction. (3 gears total) Quote
kencombs Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Those look like a set of sprockets for the double row chain that some industrial engines used. I have a set on the shelf that I took out of a 230 from a forklift. Quote
41/53dodges Posted November 4, 2010 Author Report Posted November 4, 2010 not sure, the double rows have a groove down the middle, i took one out of a combine. that was the engine i was talking about a few months back. my parts manual does not state anything about any idler gear, though. Quote
austinsailor Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 There were two different style chains. I don't recall which was which or when they changed, but my 40 had one style and my 55 had another. I do recall when I blew up the 40, I put the gears and chain from the 40 on the 55 when the timing chain on the 55 was worn out. Oh, by the way, those were both cars, but I'd guess the trucks were the same. Gene G. Quote
Frank Ollian Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 I believe timing chain and sprockets changed in 55. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 These timing chain sprockets are for 1939-50 Chrysler flathead "8". They look to be coated in cosmoline. Quote
1937 Dodge Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I have a gear driven cam on my 265 IND engine. We went with a gear driven cam that came out of a Chrysler Crown Marine engine. The Crown Marine cam has more lift than the stock cams while still retaining a smooth idle. We had to put in a different brass gear driven oil pump for correct rotation. The engine has a "different" whirling sound to it vs. the chain driven cam. Makes it a little different from the run-of the-mill flatheads. Gear driven cams were also used on heavy duty truck engines. Not at my home computer right now will send a photo later. Quote
1937 Dodge Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Here's a photo of the gear driven cam on my IND 265. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Here's a photo of the gear driven cam on my IND 265. I must assume the cam you are using is specially ground as it spins a different direction than a normal cam yet your crankshaft rotation is normal. Interesting combination. I would like to hear it run some day. Quote
