Young Ed Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 I think I mentioned before this spring on my way home from storage my odometer stopped working. So shortly after that I sent my speedometer out to a "reputable" shop to get fixed. Odometer fixed and then the speedometer which had read perfectly before that was off by 15mph high. So I pulled it back out and sent it back. Came back reading 15low. So now I've got about $325 bucks into a speedometer which is way off. I'm sick of taking it in and out! The shop won't even speak to me anymore. I did take it to a local shop(wish I had known about them before I mailed it out) and he verified that its off. It reads 10 low at 30 15low at 60 and perfect at 90. Now I'm supposed to go on a 3day trip at the end of the month and I still after all summer don't have an even close to functional speedometer. Reg Evans Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 Young Ed, For now, until the pain of R n R-ing it fades away get a gps and calibrate the front of the glass with a grease pencil. Old Reg Quote
Young Ed Posted September 6, 2010 Author Report Posted September 6, 2010 Old Reg Good idea except the bad one is currently removed. The last time it came back I just hooked it up and hung it under the dash with a wire. Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 (edited) Old Reg Good idea except the bad one is currently removed. The last time it came back I just hooked it up and hung it under the dash with a wire. How about some aftermarket round speedo, for temporary use, will something hook up to this cable, or can something be adapted for just temp use, than just mount for the the rest of the season on the steering column. Or use a GPS for the rest of the season........Fred ps I know this has caused you a lot of aggravation How about something like this, here isa link, not sure the prices http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail.aspx?gid=3143&sid=11 Edited September 6, 2010 by Rockwood Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 Use the GPS as your speedometer. My latest Garmin Nuvi shows the posted limit and my actual speed, in red if it exceeds the limit. (The only problem is that sometimes it shows the posted limit wrong, so you have to watch the signs.). Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 My speedo is about 15 mph off............we checkd it by Mary Ann following me in her PT Cruiser........and using our cell phones to say what my speed was according to her car. It kind of varies at certain points, but generally......if my speedo says 50 mph, I subtract 15 mph, therefore Im doing about 35. Not the best system, but I've been too cheap to send off and spend the $$ needed to have it redone. Evidently, that's not a foolproof thing either....... And I know my odometer is off. I have maybe 3 more used speedos sitting around but haven't been in the mood to put any of them in the dash. Maybe Ed's system of hanging one below the dash would be a good thing to try. Use the GPS to check them. Ed, I would loan you one of those speedos for your trip, but it likely would be off also. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 while using a GPS could give the man some accuracy...whatever happened to getting a guality product for money paid...?? I am in the line of thinking that either a working speedo be produced or the man get a refund...after all this is a professional he is supposed to be dealing with.. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 Thanks Tim The most depressing part of all this is I got sick of the car and it hasn't moved out of my driveway since sometime in July. Speedometer or not I'm taking it on a 3day trip to the grand rapids MN area at the end of the month though. It will be nice to be back behind the wheel. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 getting the run around and lies can cause anyone to loose heart in a project..it is a shame..one may at times have to regroup and get a refund, start anew with another company.. I hae one here that I backed away from, lost heart after finding nothing but lies...it takes the wind out of your sails..but all is not lost, I have since changed direction. located the stuff I need to proceed forward..but I am deep in the middle of another project to stop and jump back..sweet thing is these are all just toys and none need to be on the road at any exact time.. Young Ed Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 For sure Tim. The plymouth has been a driveway queen but I've been driving the 46 pickup instead and I even "stole" Dads 69 sport Fury convert and 66 fury wagon for a couple events. Quote
1940plymouth Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Ed, I am sure this won't help, but in the 22 plus years I have had my Plymouth, the only part of the speedometer that works is the odometer. The speed indictor is stuck at 20 mph, and has been for a long time. I try to judge my speed, and normally I am not over 45-50 mph by the feel of the car and the sound of the engine and rear end. My wife has followed me at times, when we got to our destination, I asked how fast I was going and she would tell me, usually like I mentioned 45-50 mph Good luck on your upcoming trip with the car, Bob Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Ed, they owe you money....they didn't do the work promised, and that's all there is to it. Quote
martybose Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 I sure understand Ed's position. Way back when (like a decade ago) I took my car to a local shop where they ran my car over a measured mile, checked the calibration of the speedo head and got everything working, or so I thought. When my daughter gave me a GPS, I took it for a ride in the 47. Turns out that my speedo is dead accurate at 60 MPH (the speed it was checked at), but reads in the low 20's when I am travelling at 30 MPH. So when I thought I was driving 30 in a 30 zone, I was actually closer to 37! I'm much more careful driving in town now. Marty Quote
Young Ed Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Well I went on a small trip saturday. Used the GPS. I find it annoying to have to look somewhere else for the speed. I need to come up with a better plan. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 How far away is the speedometer repair place that you used.....probably too far to drive to I suppose. When I used my GPS to check speed, I also found it kind of a nuisance to have to watch. Maybe if I could stick it right in front of the speedo.......... Quote
Young Ed Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Somewhere in Michigan. Too far away to go throw it through their front window. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Where is the oil cup on the speedometer of a '41 Plymouth? I don't see one. Tom Quote
