Don Jordan Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 I've been trying to get my trunk handle on and can't find the right screw For the outside. I've been told it's a number 12 fine thread. Either 28 or 32 thread. Where would I get such a beast. I'm told they are real odd ball sizes. HELP. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 Are you set on a new one? I might have a used one. Quote
Don Jordan Posted September 5, 2010 Author Report Posted September 5, 2010 Right now I just want to get the handle in. Could you tell me what the thread is? I've been trying to order one but I'm not sure of the size. If you've got one I'd take it. I never realized such a simple chore could be so complicated. This all started when I took the handle off to get a key made. Quote
Don Jordan Posted September 8, 2010 Author Report Posted September 8, 2010 I e-mailed a place called Bolt Depot and they don't have the 12 28 screw for the trunk latch. They recommended Mc Master. Why is this such a unique screw? I was going to take the one out of my 47 - I started to unscrew it and someone had put in a wood screw. I just screwed it back and am going to leave well enough alone. Can anyone recommend a nut and bolt house? I was thinking of tapping it out to 12 32 - they seem to be available. thanks Quote

Don Jordan Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 Thanks for the lead. I just sent them an e-mail. I'm not having a lot of luck with this quest. It's funny the things I have found: radios, clocks, stainless pieces and now I'm being thrown for a loop for a silly screw. Bolt Depot does not have them. McMasters does not have them. What was Chrysler thinking? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Lemme look through my jars of screws and bolts. As Dr. Evil said to Scott Evil, "I've got a whole bag of sh..... for you." Schrews, that is. I looked up on line: A no. 12 screw has a diameter of 0.2160 inch, so I can set my caliper at that. A 12-28 is "Unified Fine", UNF. Lessee if I can find a 12-28, preferably oval head. Stay tuned. ("Lemme" and "Lessee" are forum shorthand, like "Prolly" for "probably", and are to be used with caution and discretion, only by long term forum members.) -------- Sorry, no luck. Some 24's and 32's, but no 28's. Sh... out of luck. Edited September 9, 2010 by DonaldSmith new info Quote
RobertKB Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Didn't Young Ed say he might have one? Sounds like the perfect bolt supply store to me! Take him up on his offer. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 He would if I had remembered to go look. I will have to try and remember to look. I've been working with my interior all week! Quote
Young Ed Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Ok Got one. Does not appear to be a #12 to me. Sadly I don't own a tap and die set to confirm. I did go through my hell box of nuts and bolts and easily found a nut that threaded onto it which would make me think its not #12. Quote
Don Jordan Posted September 10, 2010 Author Report Posted September 10, 2010 Young Ed: if you can find one I sure would appreciate it. I didn't realize this was such a strange beast. I don't understand. Did MoPar just decide to use a bastard screw for giggles? I've written to several nuts and bolts places and no one has them. One suggestion is I drill it out and tap it 12 32 that seems to be more common. I should have just let well enough alone. There was a screw in it but when I put everything back together it wouldn't tighten. I keep telling myself how much fun old cars are. It's been 8 years in the works and I'm being stumped by a silly screw. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Try Fastenal (www.fastenal.com). They have stores all over the country and a huge selection of screw sizes. Quote
kbuhagiar Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 So, has anyone had any luck finding a source for this screw? I just realized I need one for my trunk lock, as a previous owner replaced the original with a cap-head screw. And we have verified that it is a 12-28 thread, oval-head? There seem to be and abundance of taps & dies of that size for sale on Ebay; why can't we find the fasteners to go with them? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 Don, I found a screw in my collection that may be right. I removed the screw in my P15 trunk handle......compared it to the one I found.......looked the same. Then inserted extra screw. Seemed to work just fine. I don't know how to measure them for threads or size, but I'm guessing this one might be OK. Give me your address in a PM and I'll send it via mail and you can try it to see if it works. Quote
