faucet47custom Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 I have seen this car sitting for a few years in a drive way on my route to work. The gentleman had finally put it in the drive way with a for sale sign. I left my info with his wife and these are the details he had given me. It's a '53 Desoto Firedome with a V8, he said it is the first year Hemi engine 270-280 something Cubic inch. He recieved it in his fathers estate a few years ago. It runs but needs some TLC, brakes work but need to be pumped a few times to pressurize, has some rust issues, but is really in good shape. He wants 10,000 for it but I think he is willing to deal. Still a little more than I have to spend so I am passing it along. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 The price reads convertible and the pictures read 4dr sedan. 10K seems quite steep Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 Does look pretty nice. He's probably seen a Barrett Jackson show. Quote
faucet47custom Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 I thought it was quite high as well. He seemed like he's not much of a car guy, just inherited his dads old car a few years ago and wants to sell it. I didn't get any pictures of the interior but it was in really nice shape, all but the door panels looked to be original. If memory serves me right there was a floral kind of pattern on the bottom half of the door panels. Don't know if that's right, anyone know about these cars? Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Don't know about floral patterns- I have a '52 Custom, which had two-tone solid color panels and seats. I paid $6500.00 for my wagon, and drove it home to Ohio from New York. My feeling is: our 40-60 Mopars are worth $10-15k (excluding verts & woodies) if they are originals worth keeping that way. Otherwise they are $2-5k cars needing $10-15k in restoration or hotrodding expenditures. Quote
desoto1939 Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Here is a way to get ht e price down. Brake work need to be done, Possibly needs tires for sitting on the ground dry rot, exhaust system because they used steel and rot out. Interior on the door panels is not correct. Any engine work might be needed, Rust out needs to be fixed. So now you have take a big bite out of the car and you are still left with a four door sedan. 5k at the most. I have a 39 Desoto so that is my best estimate from what I can see from the pictures. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 I never can understand the need by other "price gurus" for cutting the value of other people's cars. Makes me wonder what they value their own car at, and if they would say, "No thanks, my cars not worth that much, pay me less" if offered a high price. The guy asks $10,000, and is stated may be willing to deal. It looks like it has never been hit and is complete, and has a original hemi. Three very good starting points IMO. But hey, this is the Internet I guess, anyone can be a pro. Just my two cents, but I say more power to the guy. Quote
55 Fargo Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 3500 at the most. You probably are not far off for a quick sale deal, I was thinking somewhere between 4k to 5k, but I am no expert. Car would be worth much more as a convert or CC........Fred Quote

There are some really good points that make the car a value if the gentleman is realistic about what the car is worth. But there is a sucker born everyday also, just ask most car dealers. Quote
vintage6t Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 For comparison here's a 52 for sale near me for $4,700. Also, in New England finding something in decent condition is much harder than down south so you would expect prices to be a bit higher still. http://hartford.ebayclassifieds.com/classic-cars/wethersfield/1952-desoto-4-door-v8-hemi/?ad=5017483. If that person was actually on the forum listing it for sale I wouldn't have said anything about his price. But since he's not who cares. And if the original poster wants to help he could maybe steer the seller towards a more realistic price. You see so often where they want to high a price so the car sits and then deteriorates and is worth even less. Quote

jd52cranbrook Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 And last I checked, you don't have to be smoking crack, or a *** to have a 10 grand, 4 door, (more door) car. Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 It is offical. First person to cough up twenty grand can buy my car. Quote

Don Coatney Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Don thats too cheap I'll give you 30k Ed; Does your bride know you have just spent this much money? Send me a check and I will send the title. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 For that price I get free delivery right? Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 For that price I get free delivery right? You got it! I will drive her up directly. Are there any stops I must make between here and there? That might be a slight problem at this time. Slow downs can be done well with my full syncro five speed tranny but full or sudden stops may be a bit troublesome. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Don we better behave ourselves before we get sent to the corner. And no the wife wouldn't let me spend that much! Heck I haven't even managed to talk her into a 2500.00 70 fury III convertible thats forsale here. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 (edited) Nah, never mind, not worth it. deleted, leave it to the masters Edited August 13, 2010 by jd52cranbrook Quote
51bizzcoupe Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Nah, never mind, not worth it. deleted, leave it to the masters hey jd52, im not trying to offend(this isnt a gosip board) but the original poster stated a four door that seemed to be out of service for sometime with brake issues. to bring a car back into service is not cheap even when youre a mechanic. even if that car was a 2 door that price would be still outta hand and yes if a guy had a four door up for that price that wasnt turn key he is smoking crack. thats my opnion. look for cars for ten grand and you could do better. would you let your son buy that car for ten grand? or negotiate from that point? that car for 10, 8, or 6, is not a good value. sorry if a seat for every a?? is offensive, i heard it from a silver haired car salesman friend of mine. BobT-47P15 Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 (edited) Well, a person can ask whatever price he wants for a car, or any other item, for that matter. Regardless of what any of us thinks, the car will either sell at that price or not sell. Some people would take a lack of interest from the buying public as a hint, and lower their price. Others will not, at least for a while, change their thinking. As most of us know, the old Chrysler products unfortunately, usually won't sell for as much as Fords & Chevys. But, you gotta start somewhere. Maybe the seller did some research.....we don't know. Or maybe he's seen the prices old cars bring at some auctions.....no way to tell about that. He stated his asking price. Obviously, not all agree that it's commensurate with the model and style of car. I personally don't think I would pay the asking price if looking for such a car, but maybe it comes close to being worth it, if not much work needed. If I tried to sell something, I would not be surprised or offended that someone else said they thought I was too high. All are entitled to their opinion. We all price someone's merchandise if we make an offer. And in conclusion - best of luck to the seller. I hope it sells for some price and creates another happy Mopar owner. Young Ed Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 I still don't see how this thread is any different then us discussing the high price of a car listed on ebay which we have done many times. Quote
