55 Fargo Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Hey all , bought an installed a Stinger mosquiot zapper, as we have more sketters than the Texas and Lousianna bayous combined, and just in my yard. I even used and old t/stat housing froma Mopar flathead 6 for the base, then fashioned some ABS pipe and fittings attached tothis, working good and strong winds, did not do anything to it. The zapper is full of other bugs this am, not sure how many mosquitos got zapped, but moths and fireflys were in there, mayflies hopefully will be too big to get into this contraption. So fi anyone knows if these Zappers are any good for skeeter control please post.........Fred Quote
greg g Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 most bugs are drawn by light. mosquitos react to heat and the presence of Co2/moisture, so your zapper may not be effective for mosquitos if it doesn't have the co2 component as an attractant. We have about 4 nests/families of Pheobies in the yard and as a result very few pesky insects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebe_(bird) Quote
41/53dodges Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 try putting a tiki torch near it or something like that with fire Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 I was trying to train the second wife to catch mosquitos but she kept breaking tree limbs when she returned to perch.. Quote
Brad Lustig Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Down here, the only thing that seems to help with the mosquito population are the propane powered "mosquito magnets". They suck up the noseeums, too. The blue light zappers are fun, but don't do a thing for mosquitos unless one just happens to run into it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Fred; What you need for skeeters are bats. Check your belfry as I am sure it is loaded. Quote
55 Fargo Posted June 24, 2010 Author Report Posted June 24, 2010 Bats we have, Barn Swallows we have. Clay soil, standing water, marsh and deltas we have, and rain and more rain = gazillions of Mosquitos, **** it sucks Quote
1just4don Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 used to live on a farm and skeeters carried you away after dark. We always had barn swallows who ate millions of them. Dont know if bats came around,,,but for sure we had a family of owls take up residence in a grain bin(which was a whole new mess) . Everybody was complaining of skeeters and I got hardly a bite. There just were none around,,,but plenty of flies to go around!!!! I saw an ad for some product guaranteed to keep skeeters away. It was a extract or derived of garlic, best cure is take away breeding ground. Tires that hold water or cans jars anything wet. Vegetable oil on puddles and small ponds.. Dirty leaf filled gutters and frequent sprinkles can be as bad. Quote
Brad Lustig Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Here's the mosquito magnet if anyone hasn't seen one before http://www.mosquitomagnet.com/ My inlaws have 2 on their property. They're surrounded on 2 1/2 sides by marsh with a freshwater lake across the street. As long as they're running we don't have a bit of issues with mosquitos or noseeums (10x worse IMO). They work on tricking the bugs with heat and co2 plus something called octenal. Quote
aero3113 Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Fred, I am sure all of the frogs I saw on your property will help you out also. Quote

We have these contraptions at work, they do trpa and kill a lot of skeeters, but fogging or larvaciding works best. My Stinger zapper, is caked on with bugs this mroing, sketers and tiny moths, this deal has the octenol lure onit, you replace bi-weekly, skeeters still out there, maybe this thing helps a wee bit. I can see a return happening soon, not a 100% satisified customer...... Quote
Brad Lustig Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Personally, I tend to use a fogger in my own yard. The mosquito magnets can be had for much cheaper than that. I think my in-laws got their 2 for about $400 each. Trust me, if you were on their property, you'd be more than happy to drop that kind of money to keep the bugs away. Quote
Charlie Olson Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Actually, bug zappers also kill off the good insects that attack the mosquitoes. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 for real, it is reported and I firmly believe that B12 and nautral doses of garlic in your diet goes a long way in making yourself a bit less inviting of as host to the nasty blug suckers.. Quote
55 Fargo Posted June 24, 2010 Author Report Posted June 24, 2010 I cleaned out the Zapper, it was full of skeeters and some other insects, nothing big like moths, or especially dragon flies could ever get in this contraption. It may help a bit, but nothing is going to be too great to get ridd of the majority of the nasty little buggers.... Quote

Putrid stuff same as onions. When Lisa and I sit on our deck she goes slap happy and I dont understand why as I dont. Possibly my pipe smoking? I dont get skeeter bit but she does. I recall camping in the woods at age 8. My buddy Phil (who introduced me to his P-15 as well as many other worldly things) passed me a cigarrette and tought me how to smoke. He said it kept the skeeters away. To this day I believe him even though he was killed in a violent car crash while racing someone on the back roads of Northern Indiana. This happened when I was in Vietnam. Edited June 24, 2010 by Don Coatney Quote
41/53dodges Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 this is my favorite! still get the bites, but at least you get something out of it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VICaWgD-76w Quote
