tailgate needed

Recommended Posts

trying the shotgun approach here, my post on the 'parts needed' forum seems to not being put up.

I'm looking for a tailgate for a 51 1-ton, great gandpa decided he wanted a grain chute and I really don't!

now if I can figure out how to post a picture here, I can show you what I mean!

you all sound like my nephews! Problem with keeping that "old" is that the rest of the truck is being restored, so yah, I guess it'll have to stay as is untill I can find a replacement and hang that one up on the garage wall. The DODGE has been cut through on the very bottom, so replacing the steel would be QUITE the project!

on another note, I noticed the bolts that hold the end hinge pin parts on the box have nuts on the INSIDE of the post hole, if I take those off to just remove/work on the tailgate, how in the H-E-double hockey sticks do I get that all back together?

Why not repaint the gate and the grain door so it looks like it did the first day the hole was cut in the gate? What would granddad say about you patching the hole he made :D

If I keep the grain door I 'd want to keep the decals...and GREAT grandpa would just shake his head! :D

Unless something has happened over the years, those nuts should be welded to the back side of an "L" shapped bracket that holds the corner together. If they're not welded any longer you'll have to cut the heads of the bolts off, remove the other two bolts above the hinge, and the 4 bolts in the bottom cross piece, and slide the "L" bracket out where you can weld new nuts to it.

I just put your tail gate on my screensaver. That is a piece of 'folk art'. We need to start a poll for or against the gate. Get another if you need but put that one up in the garage AND include the bottom brace with the iconic State Farm decals in the corners!:)

Pull the gate. Put it on the wall in a special place and get a "clean" gate to work with. Pull down the "old' gate for Farmfest 2011 and you'll have the best of both worlds!

you guys are all a blast, I think I may have found a new place to hang out, next thing you are going to tell me is you like to drink beer and look at lovelies as well!

Just to stir the pot a bit more notice the decal on the rear driver corner window...

The original tailgate will never be sold, or tossed out, there is no way to "repair" it that would look at all good, so if nothing else, I make a frame out of the old bed boards and it hangs on the wall and travels to show with me!

I have two tailgates, one with the grain door and one without. I have the intact tailgate on the truck now.

I think I am going to put the other one back on. I don't get any questions about 'what's that door for?' with the 'good' tailgate on.:)

I will do some searching on my photos and see if I can find one of each and post them here later.

ggdad's, merle's, and vingtrader's tailgates all have a center hindge. My tail gate does NOT. Were both available or did the owners put in a center hindge to hold the grain? These trucks were unloaded in a grain elevator that lifted the front axle and gravity unloaded or they unloaded into a farm elevator of some sort and the gate controlled the exiting of the grain into a small hopper.

Some grain gates covered the enter end of the bed, were hindged in the middle and opened outward. Anyone have a picture of such?

1/2 ton trucks have a narrower bed and don't use the center hinge that the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks use. They have an "L" shaped bracket under the center of the tailgate to help support the center.

I'm guessing that the tailgate gates were make for unloading into an elevator or auger at the farmer's bins, not at a commercial grain elevator.
