Here is my question ,my manifold is cracked on my 48 new yorker and the chances of replacing it with a stock manifold are slim to say the least. So,I have decided to have tubular mild steel headers made ,will it be better to ceramic coat them or simply wrap them.I am worried mainly about heat build up and longevity too,any handy hints from anyone? I cannot get stainless ones made otherwise i would. What about the heat riser and the auto choke ,should i be concerned about them too? Thanks in advance all you smart guys!

The heat riser you won't have,as this section will be removed with the headers and the auto choke sits on the exhaust manifold.

You might as well go dual exhaust outlets for dual exhaust.

May have to fab a base, and have that welded to the new headers for the electric Scisson choke to mount on. Or convert to manual choke, may be the only recourse....Fred

I assume being a New Yorker, that it is the eight cylinder engine and hence the trouble finding manifolds. I have a friend with a New Yorker and he has tons of spare parts. Would you like me to check to see if he has a spare manifold for the Chrysler eight cylinder?

hi ,

yes please!!!! Uncracked will be the hard part, they say the length of the design caused problems even when they were new as the build up of heat meant cold ends and a hot centre resulted in cracks.

Which is why it is improtenat to use the coical nuts and tapered brass washers and not over tightening the manifolds as they grow and shrink with heat cycles.

Is your manifold cracked into pieces or stress cracked? If stress craked, it might be able to be welded.

The technique involves drilling holes at the end of the cracks, "V" grooving the cracks with a grinding wheel, then heating the manifold and mig welding or tig welding the cracks.

But I guess if you can find an uncracked used on thats the best.

I know where there is one 8cyl 46-48 chrysler in a junkyard. You could try calling them and see if it has manifolds. I know the engine was in it but I didn't look at the pass side of it. google french lake auto parts in mn

Hopefully I will not need a new motor for a while..mine has only done just over 16000 miles..not only that ,the shipping to London might be expensive!

I am beginning to think i may as well have the headers made, even if i get a "new" one ,it will be still be over 60 years old and probably getting porous.

I had my tube headers ceramic coated, and would do it again. They look the same as they day I installed them, 15,000+ miles later. I had them coated inside and out, so that the won't rust out over time.

I have a set of tube headers on my '53 chevy pickemup with a V8, and they look like hell, even having been painted several times with high temp paint. They have rust everywhere, and I'm sure they are rusting from the inside out too. They have about the same number of miles on then as my Plymouth coated headers.

One issue I have with my Plymouth tube headers, is that they sit too close to the block, and the tappet covers can not be removed without first removing the headers from the engine. This makes it impossible to do a hot valve adjustment...

well ,thanks to you all ,i think the way to go is tube headers of mild steel BUT ceramic coated ,an american company called tech line seems to be well respected so i will give them a call ,it's an oven baked on coating thats seems to be both durable and heat retaining. My only worry is now the automatic choke! Shall i just replace it with a manual choke?

Norman, you can either convert to a manual choke. What carb have you got? Is it a 2bbl, what is available to allow for a manual choke conversion. On the Carter B&B carb, it is easy, just use a manual choke carb top, and run a cable, but on your 2 bbl, not sure about that.

Can the outfit that makes the headers, not fab a plate and to allow the choke to bolt onto, to allow the scisson electric choke to function.

Hope it works out well.........
