JIPJOBXX Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 I noticed when playing around with my car problem today that when I disconnected the vacuum advance that the engine ran great. But then I put it all back together again with new plug wires and boots and started it back up and it ran like a champ! I set up my vacuum gage and it was right up past 20 psi and holding fairly steady. And then I ran it up slowly and it ran great. But when I took it out for a spin the same old problem happen again and that is that it just mist, and mist and mist some more. It idealed ok when I parked it but what can be the problem???? Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Sorry to hear all that trouble Jon, have you tried going back to no plug covers yet? Quote
greg g Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Take your vacuum gauge and hook it up inside the car, if you have vacuum wipers. If not then maybe you can prop it up somhow at the hood cowl seam, leave the hood on the safety latch and take it for a drive. watch the gauge when the miss occurs. Wonder if maybe you have a sticky valve or something, or a vacuum leak under higher air velocity throughthe system. Is you intake manifold good and snug? Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 I took the covers oft and reinstall some new covers for the plugs and it still does the same thing. A friend of mine suggest to check out the coil to see if it was getting hot or the condenser. Also he said it might just be condinsation under the distributor cap. Well tomorrow another day and I will figure it out!!!!! And no the caps that I bought are not the problem it somewhere else. Just got to figure it out. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 good luck to you,, hope you find it. Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 did you ever give the engine a valve job? if they somehow get out of round, they will only fit properly in certain positions, and the valves rotate when the cam turns, even if there are rotators. if one valve is improperly sealed, it will affect them all. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 I replaced the coil last year but maybe just maybe it needs another coil???????????????????? Seems to run great when idling and when running up on power while in neutral. I was thinking last night about this and it funny that it will not happen right away but after the car has been running for awhile. So here I go to get another coil and if that's the problem boy I will be pist oft. But it sure is acting like its losing spark somewhere? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Suggest you do what Dad and I did to my car when I had a high speed issue. Wire a light bulb into the coil so it will light when its functional. Then take a test drive. If the bulb dims or goes out when you have the issue it will help determine if its spark. Quote
power_hungry Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Is it running rich? Pulling the hose off the vacuum advance would lean it out. It would run better cold than warm/hot, too. Also I've heard of electrical connection problems in the dizzy when the advance plate moves. Quote
Powerhouse Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 I once had a problem while in motion only. One of the wires would move slightly enough to cause an arch on the throttle linkage...really weird. Might be it. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Just throwing this out there, recheck your point dwell, and see if it helps to close up the spark plug gap a little. Where is your timing set? Try about 5 degrees ahead? Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Dear J. Are the Pigtail wires inside the Distributor Insulated? If one is Bare it causes problems similar to your description. Tom Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted February 9, 2010 Author Report Posted February 9, 2010 :mad:Well something went south in my engine as I just took a compression check and the first two cyclinders really out for the count. I hope its just a head gasket as that makes the most since as it was running really good and then this happened. I hate to take the head oft but it looks like I'm going to haft to do that. Is there anyway to check what going on under the head without taking it oft? I can see the vlvs are going up and down and there is a little compression but not much. Need some help! Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 It sounds like you're gonna be twisting a lot of 11/16 socket. There's only one way to see under the head. Did you put a little heavy oil in the front two and check it again just to make sure? Changing the head gasket is pretty easy, just an afternoon tinkering. What else ya gonna be doin', shoveling snow like the rest of us? Quote
