48P15Annie Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I just began the process of re detailing the hubcaps/beauty rings and fender emblems. The hub caps are a disaster. My grandfather never cleaned them, so there's a lot of grime on them. I found that a Brillo pad works great to polish and cut the grime. Also worked great to get the dirt out of the pits on the bad one. But, that's not my main reason for posting. I have a question about the red paint on the fender emblems. Where exactly is it suppose to be? In between the letters only, or beyond? The one I popped off, there is little between the letters left, but it is also all along the bottom edge, and I see tiny remnants on the top edge. That doesn't seem right to me. I would think it should be only on the front surface, in between the letters. Also, how do they attach to the body? The one I popped off, I KNOW is not correct. For one thing, it is slightly bent and twisted. And the 3 posts appear to be CUT off(who would do that?). And they were held onto the body with black RTV. I would assume they are held into the body with barrel clips or speed nuts from behind the fender? I have been looking on eBay for a better set and one hubcap, but I'm batting zero. Still on the hunt for that rear bumper bar and a rear ashtray. Thanks for the help guys! Quote
Young Ed Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 This is an NOS set you can see how they were done. You could certainly repaint your set and put them back on with double sided tape. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 This is how I did mine. I think there are four little posts on the back side of the letters that go thru holes in the fender, and are attached with what I call speed nuts......those rectangular springy clips. However, I used some weatherstrip trim cement on mine as I couldn't get to the back side conveniently. Have held for several years now. Quote
48P15Annie Posted January 25, 2010 Author Report Posted January 25, 2010 Thanks guys! Ed, that's a great picture. I had already considered using double sided tape. I have a roll of some really thin and narrow stuff that would be perfect. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I did mine the same as BobT-47P15 and they are the same as the NOS ones shown. Used a very small brush and then ran my thumb over any areas that excess at the time or error. It doesn't take long. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) Robert - good to know someone else does things the same way. I don't always know if it's exactly right......but usually pretty darn close, anyway. I use good old Testor's model paint.......... Edited January 25, 2010 by BobT-47P15 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) Other emblems..........stop light.....hubcaps....hood. No red in grooves of hood ornament or circle on hubcap. Oval tag on firewall was red also. Edited January 25, 2010 by BobT-47P15 Quote

I use good old Testor's model paint.......... Same way and just about the same paint. I used 1104 which is a bit darker. I believe the first time I did them many years ago I used the red you did. I just decided I wanted to go a bit darker this time. Great minds think alike. Quote
desoto1939 Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) If I remember correctly someposted onthis several months ago. And if my minds works then I think they coated the letters with some type of film of a soap product or grease then sprayed the entire emblem. Then when the pait dried the jus wiped off the grease from the fron of the letters and then the space between each letter was painted. Do so searching any you might find this posting. Do a search on the topic Quick emblem resortation technique. Arthur1947 posted how he did this on 8/25/2009 and it is a real simple trick. 48P15Annie Posted January 25, 2010 Author Report Posted January 25, 2010 I remember that post. It was Vaseline. I don't need a method how to paint them. I need to know what to paint on them Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 basically your choice of spray or brushable that suits your fancy..personally I use the Chrysler high temp engine red and spray my units.. Quote
Furylee2 Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 Other emblems..........stop light.....hubcaps....No red in grooves of hood ornament or circle on hubcap. A few years ago I was talking to a member in our POC region about painting my 41 hubcaps. He told me when he restored his P15 back in the late 80's, he purchased NOS hubcaps. He said he purchased them from two different sources, they were sealed in those heavy brown paper bags, When he opened them for the first time ever, two had the rings painted and two didn't. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 Lotsa different deals out there from the old days, I reckon. Ya just never know. Quote
