mackster Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 I was changing the oil on my desoto and I pop off the oil plug and out it came all the oil at once! I let it all drained out and I cant find the plug. I got the 10-50w oil ready to be put in but I cant right now until I find it or maybe I can use a dollar plug (plumbing term) I know these engines dont have alot of pressure so it should work out just fine. let me know three things: Did I win the bone head of the week thread? Do you have one to sell? pics? Do you know where I can buy one ASAP? maybe a part number from napa or something you have used before.. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 What did you drain it INTO???? Usually my oil plug simply falls into the drain pan, then I have to pull it out and get a nice coat of black oil on my fingers. Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Mackster, nine times out of ten when that happens to me, I have kicked the thing off to the side somewhere. I don't have a lift and I have to crawl underneath the cars when I work on them. What with arms and legs thrashing around, you might have knocked it off to the edge of the area where you were working. I'd pour the used oil into a gallon milk jug using a funnel and see if it turns up. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Look over there behind the right rear tire. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 No kidding. That's not out of the question. At least when I'm working. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 If you have a strong magnet you can sweep the area near the car to find it. Quote
mackster Posted January 17, 2010 Author Report Posted January 17, 2010 If you have a strong magnet you can sweep the area near the car to find it. I give up! I looked and I look. my guest is a cat found it quite tasty and stole it from me. I even swept my working area (I'll never do that again!). it just dissapeared. I dont believe in ghosts so it had to be a cat that stole it. or wast it a squirrel...... Quote
dparksie Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 I usually look at my son fro missing parts and tools. They can be anything.... I have lost more than 1 bolt in the rebuilding of Katherine. Oops meant to say misplaced:rolleyes: Hope you find it. We are getting the rain now so no work for the next week Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Did you look in you pants cuffs? coat pocket? You can have my old metal detector if it will help. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Like Don Coatney and Pete Blueskies in the Big Race, I challenge you, Mackster, for the title of Top Bonehead. We can each relate our misadventures--complete with photographs, if available: contusions, lacerations, buggered-up projects, stripped threads, mangled parts, ruined tools--and we will let the forum members judge who gets the dishonor. Quote
dparksie Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Most embarassing: after getting everything turning over and a tune up. I was cranking and cranking and not getting any fire only to find out I forgot to put the rotor in.. After putting in rotor I found out the points were not set and barely opening. I don't count lost bolts as bonehead more a case of "not again....":D Quote
Young Ed Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Joe I have a feeling more then just you and Mackster could compete for that title. Ask anyone here who was at the Detroit POC national. Quote
RHDSP15C Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 There is a very simple answer - Fumoto quick drain valve - no tools needed. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Apparently, the Detroit meeting was the one to go to. What happened? Quote
mackster Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 Did you look in you pants cuffs? coat pocket? You can have my old metal detector if it will help. ding ding ding! we have a winner! Niel got it right!I found it in my coat pocket!!!! HA HA HA! I cant believe it. in all the confusion of the oil running all at once and me trying to catch it all, and the oil bucket not being deep enough to catch it all, I somehow put in my pocket. worst is the wife found it in the washer. so I have a ruin jacket (no biggie, just a few stains) and angry wife who thinks the washer could have exploded! Joe im all for the bonehead race! I believe im two spaces ahead! Dparkside is close behind me:D and yound ed is coming strong from behind! he might pull in infront after the poc story....we will see. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 In your pocket, huh? And I suppose the wife heard it banging around in the dryer. I don't think I've ever put the drain plug in my pocket before. But I have done things in the same league. Heck, I set my Plymouth on fire twice in the course of this project. That ought to count for something. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 You were very fortunate to find it but I could have saved you a lot of heartache as I have a sure-fire way of finding missing items. Buy another one and as soon as you get home or to your garage, the first one will turn up immediately. This process is guaranteed and has worked for me many times! Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 You ALL are safe from winning a bonehead award if you recall the incident I had with the table saw. I haven't gone near it yet! I almost have my fingernails back after 4 months. Go ahead and tell your storys, but I know real stupid first hand. (Pun intended). Quote
