Niel Hoback Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Yes Norm, I know zackly where it is at the corner of US 30 and Indiana 53. Thats about 5 miles from me. However, they built one not a half mile from my house at the corner of US 6 and Ind. 51 about five years ago. But, due to an unfortunate experience at a White Castle in Bloomington, Indiana, I have not had one since about 1988. Quote
Arthur1947 Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 I made it a point to visit In-N-Out when I was in San Diego back in July. I was not all that impressed with In-N-Out. My visit to Jack in the Box was much more satisfying. I put In-N-Out on par of just a little better than McDonald's. I know some people really love the place, but I was woefully disappointed. The fries reminded me of stale canned french-fried potato sticks. I'll drive past an In-N-Out to find a Burger King. I know some folks in Texas really like What-A-Burger, but I put in on par of just a little below Burger King. My wife and I tend to visit Braum's if we see one when traveling. It's all a matter of taste, but I don't recommend In-N-Out to any one traveling to that part of the US. Captain Neon, You're crazy! I always knew you were. Burger King above In-N-Out? Really? Best. ARTHUR Quote
Normspeed Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 But, due to an unfortunate experience at a White Castle in Bloomington, Indiana, I have not had one since about 1988. Have we stumbled across the origin of the term "sliders"? Quote
Young Ed Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Well.........personally' date=' I like White Castles. Great little burgers. Don't have them here though. But..........every trip we make down to Louisville, KY we stop in Merrillville, IN for lunch at a White Castle on the way down. I usually eat about 5 of them, order of fries and a coke for lunch. I'm sure Niel probably knows just where I stop.[/quote']Me too Norm gotta have one every once in a while. But there are white castles all around the metro. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) Ed & Niel, I grew up with those things as a kid down in Louisville. Parents would take us to a White Castle every now and then. Back then I could wolf down at least a dozen by myself (they were only 5 cents each then). My older brother and I loved those things. Lived in Chicago from 1967 - 1971. White Castles were a staple for my ex wife and I back then every Christmas Eve night. We'd put the kids (between 1 and 5 during that period)to bed around 8 PM. Then about 10 PM I'd start assembling the kids toys from Santa. Then around midnight we'd be getting hungry. Had a White Castle about 2 miles from us. Would go pick up a couple dozen and bring them home for a midnight snack. Then finish up with the toys and go to bed. Really missed that tradition when we moved up here. Now I can only eat about 5 of them at a time though. Guess I could eat more if I didn't have the fries. Edited October 27, 2009 by Norm's Coupe Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) Have we stumbled across the origin of the term "sliders"? Norm, Some people do call White Castle burgers sliders. But.......a lot of other people also call them "Belly Bombers". Think that's because people tend to eat too many of them at one time, especially after they have a few too many beers just before that. Arthur1947 Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 I've only had White Castle burgers from a box at Costco. They were good but I'm sure they're better fresh from the stand. Best. ARTHUR Quote
eric wissing Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Arthur, Those Fish tacos look great. I like non-chain food. We actually hadan Inand Out here. Not sure what happened to it. It was a really big deal when they opened the first store as far east as Utah. I don't think Iowa is even on In-N-Out's radar at this point. There was an outfit a couple of years ago that tried to open similar restaurants in states where In-N-Out wasn't operating. I'm not sure of all the details, but In-N-Out accused them of trademark infringement and the impostor stores were eventually closed. Any loyal In-N-Outers know more than that? Arthur, Before visiting California, I inquired of my brother living in No-Cal about In-N-Out. He has an even lower opinion of In-N-Out than me. He refers to In-N-Out as McDonald's with long lines and puny portions. Being from Missouri, I had to see for myself. I still stand by my own personal preference for Burger King over In-N-Out. Braum's is still my favourite burger place, but they tend to take longer than I am comfortable with. As far as pizza is concerned, however, I'll take any hole-in-wall place in Manhattan over what passes for pizza any where else that I have been. That's high praise for Manhattan as there is a pizzeria in Austin Minnesota that I have to patronise every time I go to southern Minnesota. Quote

Rodney Bullock Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 This thread is just plain wrong:mad: fat people all over my house are in an uproar. I long for the days when I could eat anything I want.... That burger with a milk shake, those fries smothered in chili and chese oh the humanity;) My kingdom for some onion rings. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 We've got a new chain in MN called smashburger. Been there a few times very tasty. The cashier did make fun of my once for wanting extra pickles on a BBQ bacon burger that doesnt come with pickles in the first place Quote

Jim Saraceno Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 We have White Castles here in St. Louis. I call them "the gift that keeps on giving" as they are not broiled or fried, they are "steamed on a bed of onions". They taste great as you eat them, it's just that five hours later they are still repeating on you:( On the job, occasionally instead of bringing in donuts, someone will bring in dozens of White Castle burgers. We'll tear into them for morning break. Rumor here has it that those are not real onions they are cook with but cabbage soaked in onion juice. Quote

Rodney, If you like onion rings this is a good one. A western bacon cheeseburger. There's something wonderful about the way they place the meat and cheese in between the bacon and onion ring along with the tangy bar-b-que sauce. Quote

ARTHUR Arthur, you are correct. We can buy them frozen in the grocery store by the box too. I've had those too. Think there's about a dozen in the box. But.........they are not quite as tasty as going to the White Castle for them. Quote

Hey enough of the Slurs against my home!! It isn't Sioux Falls, It's Sioux City, we came first and have gone down the tubes first. This might have been one of those knock offs. Furylee2 Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Here is how I rate berger joint chain stores1) Five Guys ... 9) White Castle I was going to ask about Five Guys. They just opened one here in Omaha, less than a half-a-mile from work. Worth checking out? Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I was going to ask about Five Guys. They just opened one here in Omaha, less than a half-a-mile from work. Worth checking out? I ate there last night and I am still full. Dont order a large order of fries unless you have a party of four. Lisa and I ordered a double burger each, large order of fries, and two small drinks. They use big paper bags for all orders. They place the burgers, napkins, etc. in the bottom of the bag along with a big stryfoam cup full of fries. Then the fill the bag to the top with fries. We ate our fill and never touched the stryfoam cup full of fries. We brought it home along with the rest of fries in the bag. burp, squese me, burp:cool: Forgot to mention they offer-up in the shell salted peanuts while you wait for your order to be cooked. The shells go on the floor. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 We have Five Guys here in Alexandria, VA. I think it might have gotten started here. It is really good, but there is an expression: "Death by Five Guys." In fact, one time I went there with none other than our friend Rodney Bullock. Don't you remember that, Rodney? Also, it's a good thing I got to this thread late. Too many chances for off color comments. All I will say is that I believe the origin of the term "sliders" has to do with what happens a half hour or so after you eat one. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Indeed, Joe. Thats what it means, they slide right through. Sometimes quicker than others. I've been to three different Five Guys. Way more greasy food than anyone needs. But I describe them as the kind of burger I would make for myself, if I could cook. They are very proud that their potatoes are real Idaho potatoes. Finest kind. Quote
Arthur1947 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 The term "Sliders" could equate to the "Whopper" from Burger King as in oops! I feel a Whopper coming on. Best. ARTHUR Quote
