BobT-47P15 Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 At the Hunnert Car Pile Up held in Illinois this past weekend. No idea who the owner is or where from. Looks to be well done. Just posting for fun.....borrowed from the HAMB. Evidently the show was overrun by participants and was shut down by law enforcement because of overcrowding. A lot of cars could not get in and traffic was backed up quite a long way. For those who were able to get in during the morning, they said it was a good show. Link to the complete post: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407099 Denise was there with her Olds convert. And then there was a "cousin" to it. Ya don't see many 46-48 Olds ragtops. Quote
dezeldoc Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Denise racks up the miles on that olds! she is all over the place with it. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 dang sure happy to see that the skanky looking red wheels are losing favor amount that crowd... Quote

Phil Martin Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Fairgrounds in Morris,Ill Put hunnert car pileup in your search engine good website Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 dang sure happy to see that the skanky looking red wheels are losing favor amount that crowd... I see red behind the caps on the first olds vert but chrome wheels very much to my liking on the second olds vert. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 I'm neither for or against red wheels on old cars of the 50's and before. But........guys, ifin you are buildin a true retro rod, that was the color of choice for wheels back in the 50's. So.........that's why you see so many red wheels on old cars. I don't remember seeing any chrome wheels at all back then on rods of the era when growing up. They are more of a modern thing, which I'm also neither for or against. By the way. When you look at pictures of my car, my wheels are not red. They may look that way on your computer, but.........they are actually maroon. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 I see red behind the caps on the first olds vert but chrome wheels very much to my liking on the second olds vert. Don..the chrome wheels go far in accenting the car without screaming 'look at me" wheels are an accent not the main focal point if your eyes goes right there on first glance then it detracts entirely from the car...only thing worse is red wheels, no caps/trim rings and WWW's..double dose of the yuks..Now..tell me this..what is with the black truck behind Denise's Olds? what is that texture... red wheels look good on a Radio Flyer Quote
Young Ed Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Dads convert summer of 66. He said he pulled the wheel covers off and sprayed the wheels black. Guess that was the in thing. Of course his car wasnt exactly a rod either Quote
greg g Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Ed, the snow tires kinda give it away as not being a hot rod..............Still a nice car for a young lad. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 13, 2009 Author Report Posted October 13, 2009 I think the stuff on the truck behind the Olds is road spray......several cars had that muddy stuff all up the sides.....evidently there was a gravel road coming into the place. I remember back in high school in the 50s, red wheels were popular. One guy was different - he painted his gold on a 50 ford. There were black rims as well. The club who puts on the Pileup will probably have to make a decision before next year's event. As they seem to have suddenly outgrown the fairgrounds, they probably need to seek a larger venue. Some other places were suggested by HAMBers, and some opinions were given as to why or why not about those places. So it will be wait and see. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 wide white snow tires even Do they even make snow tires now? I don't think I've seen those advertised since about the 70's, not long after they came out with the radials. Some even had steel studs in them. The studded snow tires were outlawed around here sometime in the 70's though. They tore up the roads too much. I stopped using snow tires in the early 60's. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 13, 2009 Author Report Posted October 13, 2009 Norm, here's an ad for a Dean studded snow tire. Plus this outfit has others of similar nature. So, it appears they are still made. In some places, I believe in the northwest part of the country, you are required to use tire chains when snow is on the roads, or face arrest by the authorities. Not sure if that rule applies to roads other than interstates. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 ..what is with the black truck behind Denise's Olds? what is that texture...red wheels look good on a Radio Flyer Looks like what happens when you closley follow the truck that paints white lines on the road. Quote

He now has a brand new set of snow tires installed on them and is ready for winter. Actually after the day we had yesterday I hope he's got them on the car already. Quote

power_hungry Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 As far as I know, studs are still legal in Colorado for winter driving. I had them on my full size van and pickup when I lived there a few years ago. Quote
stylinmike Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Half of Canada has a MANDATORY winter tire law. I pretty much sell a set of winter tires every second day lately. Quote
