Plymouthy Adams Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 what tests have you performed to determine if the guage, sender or interconnecting harness or tank ground is the actual problem..? Quote
michael.warshaw Posted August 23, 2009 Author Report Posted August 23, 2009 i havent checked anything not sure what it could be? my guage is ussually around the 1/4 of a tank and bounces all over the plae when i drive im not sure why it doesnt work ? Quote
randroid Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 michael, Does the gauge go to 1\4 when you turn on the switch or is it always there? If it goes to 1\4 when you turn the key you most likely have that much gas in the tank. Have you filled the tank yet? The fuel gauge system isn't exactly straight-forward, but there have been a number of threads written about it and testing it isn't difficult. Check the archives for it and you'll probably get more information than you want. -Randy Quote

greg g Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 could be as simple as needing to run a good ground from the sending unit to the body. Quote
Harvey Tank Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 someone here on the forum had one he wonted to get rid of. mybe he will come back if he sees this post Quote
Frank Elder Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 could be as simple as needing to run a good ground from the sending unit to the body. Mike, if you still have the original wiring in your car its probably crumbly and falling apart in places, you might want to consider a new harness so it will run right. Like Greg says you can never have a good enough ground, star washers and bare metal make your connections solid.....then you can worry about other things. Quote

Unless you know auto electric, which a lot of us don't, don't even mess with measuring Ohms, etc., on a sending unit that is on it's last legs. I think the best thing to do is just replace all of it. Get yourself a NOS fuel gauge (they are always on Ebay), new wiring and new sending unit. Don't knock yourself out trying to preserve and use the old stuff. I've tried and it still doesn't work. Everything has been replaced except the sending unit, which I'm going to go ahead, bite the bullet and purchase. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 took out my unit, it was all rusty ordered one from roberts motor parts. Quote
47heaven Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 took out my unit, it was all rusty ordered one from roberts motor parts. I feel that should be the end to your problem. I nice, new one is better than trying to fix that old, rusty one. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 You guys take all the fun out of this. I've got 10K miles on my perfectly functional sending unit that Dad and I replaced the arm on it with a piece of coat hanger and I had a float from my old 94 dakota sending unit that we used. It works great. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted August 27, 2009 Author Report Posted August 27, 2009 i purchased the sending unit from roberts motor parts but i just sat the atkent website how much do they charge for a sending unit? Quote
Young Ed Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 Norm mine was missing it just wasn't connected anymore! We did find it floating around in the tank. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 I've still got my one wire unit in the box if anybody needs it. Tom Quote
