I'm new in the Plymouth scene

Hello I am new to the Plymouth scene and I have a few questions. I recently purchased a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Convertable with a frozen motor. The seller gave me a motor from a flathead six from a 1955 model w/bell housing-will this bolt up to my transmission and motor mounts? I live in Ontario, California and do not know anyone that can help me out w/this car. Any help or phone #'s are greatly appreciated! My cell is (562) 447-5763. Thanks! Mando

As Ed said, reuse the old one with your old tranny. It should be a straight bolt on. By the way, welcome to the best forum on the WWW. If you can't get an answer to your question here, there isn't an answer. Pictures would be great once you have the time.

It is basically a bolt in. That said it is a pretty simple swap with one caveat. You need to rmove the hood, the radiator, ad ren or borrow and engine hoist with a leveler and you need a good bit of overhead clearence. The engine needs to go in high in the air and at a very steep angle. Sometimes it even a good idea to let the air out of the tires to lower the front end of the car.

Lotsa forum guys in Cali, maybe somebody nearby to give you a hand.

Welcome. Remember to go to the maig pages of the site hosting this forum and read all the good stuff there.

By the way the 55 engine is a 230 cubic inch the original was 218. Also more compression and more power so its a good upgrade.

MANDO..claybill from illinois. it all bolts up as most all of it is the same. i found a few differences when installing the clutch pivot linkage near the bell housing..TAKE PICTURES OF HOW THAT linkage is hooked up before you discard parts. you might have to use some from each motor.

mechanically they are all the same.

i have a 48 conv't! there are several of 'em around the forum.

I think there are quite a few of us in the general area. I am in Irvine. If you wait till the end of summer or you are working in an A/C garage, I could likely find a saturday to help out. Ontario is hotter than anything this time of year. I think it cools down about December! I can take it for about 20 minutes, then I need an air conditioned bar and a beer.:D

Thanks for your help fellas. I didnt want to swap the old motor but the original one is toast. And your rite about this being the best web site for Plymouths around. Is there an engine swap thread on here some one can send me the link?

Welcome to the forum. There are several threads that will address engine removal and replacement. There is a search link on the tool bar lat the top of this page. Use it for keyword searches. If you get hung up and need specific answers just ask away.

Mando-

I live in Upland and have a '47 Special Deluxe. I just tried to call your cell that you posted, but that number is for a business and they didn't know who you were.

BTW...it's not wise to post personal info on public message boards where anyone can see besides the guys here. Just have people contact you via private message or email.
