Jims50chrysler
Hi everyone Just curious Lots of cars came with fender welt but what was the actual function of fender welt...anyone skip replacing it after they have painted their car or eliminated it all together? greg g
Think of it as a gasket, keeping the dirty wet environmental stuff under the car, and the shiney stuff on top clean. also keeps the body sections from squeeking when flexing. Just looking to buy some for my POS Studie. Nice S brindle Brown.

BobT-47P15
I think the Special Deluxe models had the chrome looking welt. Not sure about the cheaper Deluxe. There are several colors in vinyl welting today to choose from too. It needs to have plenty of notches in the material that goes between fender and body to allow for the bends. greg g
My lowley deluxe came from the factory with the chrome or stainless bead just like your high dollar Special Deluxe. The first owner did have to pay extra for the passenger side sunvisor though.......
BobT-47P15
Oh, er, uh, Greg.......i didn't mean to demean your Deluxe model coupe. But I did wonder if both had the same welt........ About the sun visor --- Chrysler has still done similar things lately.......like my wife's 2001 PT Cruiser.......it only has an armrest on the driver's seat. Some folks got real clever and bought a drivers rest for a British PT Cruiser......as it was on the right hand seat. Then installed it on their passenger seat. chopt50wgn
Julianos has a whole bunch of different color fender welts. They will even match a color to your car, but for a price.
Joe Flanagan
My 49 Special Deluxe came with the vinyl welting. It was also painted the same color as the car, which I find confusing, because I didn't think they did that.

Levand16
on the thought of skipping out on putting it back on... Has anyone welded up the seam on the fenders? In other words molded the fenders to the body making it all one
Young Ed
Sure lots of street rodders. Some if they are lame just bondo over the seam after the fenders are bolted on. If you buy the vinyl stuff its cheap and pretty easy to install. Im sure a lot quicker then getting the fenders smoothly welded on.
BobT-47P15
Just depends on what you want. I like the original look, so would want some type of welt. Lots of rod/custom jobs where the seam is filled. I think this one was filled in some manner...... To the entire ad on that green car.....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Plymouth_W0QQitemZ360166645524QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item53db9adf14 Oftentimes in the past, the welt would just be painted over when the car got a new paint job. Therefore - matching welt. Edited July 1, 2009 by BobT-47P15
Plymouthy Adams
welded fenders don't look good on some cars regardless of year and make..other take to it like fish to water..same with hood seams..I am not fond of smooth/decked hoods..guilty of molded rear fenders myself.. Young Ed
Tim those backup lights look like the porche ones on my
Plymouthy Adams
bingo..! and they kinda dictated the rear lenses as for shape as I do like these all glass lenses...I gave frenching only a passing thought..as in I pass on any thought of frenching lights front or rear...lol I am getting closer on the remodel being complete..can't wait till I can get back to the shop on the cars..even if just to lay on the floor looking up imagining what I need to do next.. Young Ed
Tim those lights worth anything? I've been thinking of pulling them off the 51. I have a set of mopar backup lights to use instead. They do kinda look nice on their though.
Plymouthy Adams
Ed..I am not sure if all the Hella lights had actual model psecific number embossed/stamped on the trim rings..look for that..it is that or the backing plate is special, cannot recalljust which..if verifiable for the 356 Porsche..then yes they worth a few coin.. desoto1939
I have used the newere vynal fender welting for several reasons. 1. This asct as an anti squeek between the fender and the body. 2. If you get wax on the vynal it will not stain like the original 3. The original being cloth soaks up the water and this then cause the inner fender where it mounts to the body to start to rust. 4. If you get polish onthe cloth it stays white and you can not get it off. 5. Most fender welting ways always black expect for the chrome SS style. 6. For judging the welt is black and sohould not be painted. 7. It always looks good and keeps its apperance 8. Ihave had mine on my 39 Desoto for 12 years and it has not changed color and is stillin perfect condition. 9 being simi rigid you can work with this very easily. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
