Bingster Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 I need new upper and lower front control arm bumpers for my '47 Desoto. I can get the uppers re-vulcanized at Steele but have not found the lowers except at Andy's. Has anybody bought his rubber bumpers? I hesitate buying NOS due to the age of the rubber, and at $14.00 each Andy's seem a bargain. Quote
Andydodge Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 I bought both upper & lower bumpers for my P11 from Andy Bernbaums a few mths ago, both appear very nice. The uppers have a flash chromed steel bracket molded to them, the lowers tho' should have had a steel plate molded to them with the attaching stud welded to that, however there is no steel plate and it appears that the stud or maybe bolt has been molded with the bolt head inside the rubber and you need to be careful about how much you tighten the nut underneath as it may start to pull the bolt thru the rubber as it tightens(mine started to)..........the actual rubber vulcanisation on both upper & lower appears perfect btw..........andyd Quote
adam_knox Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 I just installed one on Friday from Andy! Ha! Talk about timing! Yeah, it was a good fit...but The threading on the new bumper is different from your old one. And for some reason, Andy likes to ship only the part you need, not a nut to go with it! (Would it seriously bankrupt him to include a 7 cent nut with the darn thing?!) So you'll either need to check your junk drawer for a nut that will fit, or take 25 minutes out of your day and go to the hardware store to purchase a nut. It drives me nuts! Quote
Bingster Posted June 1, 2009 Author Report Posted June 1, 2009 Thanks guys. Well, it sounds like they will be okay. I know what you mean about the lower bumper rubber being vulcanized onto the steel plate, which has the bolt welded to it. I'm wondering what creates the platform, or base, for the lower bumper if there is no metal plate? I guess the steel on which it sits. Quote
Andydodge Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Bingster, the bottom rebound rubbers would be better with the plate but they haven't got it, you could make a plate with a hole out of some 1/16th or similar, the rubber is held onto the lower arm by the bolt & nut underneath which from memory uses a 5/16 or 3/8 UNC thread rather than the UNF thread that the original piece uses, so long as you don't overtighten the nut and pull the bolt thru the rubber it should be fine, they certainly look o/k......andyd Quote
dezeldoc Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I like the nos rubber much better than the garbage they make now! Quote
RALPHDEI Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Only if he was the last person on earth would I buy anything from him. Quote
Andydodge Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I don't doubt what others have said about Andy B , but I have generally found him to be o/k, admittedly he copied my name but don't hold that against him.........lol.....andyd Quote
dirty dan Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I've dealt with Andy a couple of times and found him to be knowledgeable and helpful. What sort of problems have others here had? What should I watch out for? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I believe a number of forum members are referring to a set of writings as composed by Robert Louis Stevenson Quote
dirty dan Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I believe a number of forum members are referring to a set of writings as composed by Robert Louis Stevenson I would guess that to mean the "Strange Case" of a particular doctor and not "Treasure Island". Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 you know your Stevenson I see.... Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 That's great. The thought of Andy B. swigging his potion in a back room of his place is too much. When I call, I get the Mister. When I used to call, that is. Some people here have spoken with the Doctor. Search the forum for full background. And not just here. Other forums are rich with anecdotes about him. Funniest thing I ever read about him was on this site, when someone referred to him as Andy Burn-Bomb. Quote
dirty dan Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 you know your Stevenson I see.... Unlike today, when I was in school we were force-fed classic books. (And I'm glad we were.) I even had "Penrod & Sam" assigned to read in fourth grade. You don't find teachers like that anymore. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I do try to read some of the classics as I get a chance..some have been very good material..others so dry it would choke a cotton ball..worse book I have read so far is none of than DRACULA...horrible is the best I can say..but..I did read it...!!. I do not care for that syle of writing..I visit an online literature site for free downloads of the entire books... Quote

Today, if I find myself not enjoying a book after the second chapter, I'm done with it. There are too many things in this world that I have to do. I'm not going to add more to that list. I guess we're far enough off topic where we should quit this thread. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 We were force-fed classics, too. I'm glad they did it. Always helps if you have a good teacher to explain it. I read "Frankenstein" not long ago. Pretty good. Next time you call Andy Bernbaum, start quoting classic literature to him over the phone. See what happens. Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I like the Edgar Allen Poe short stories and poetery. Fall of the House of Usher and The Tell Tale Heart are a couple of my favorites. And of course the Bells. Of the bells, bells, bells, bells- Bells, bells, bells- To the moaning and the groaning of the bells. Interesting that Poes best work was done under the influence of narcotics. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Don't know if you knew this, but he was from Baltimore. That is why their NFL team is called the Ravens. There was a particular drug he was fond of but I can't remember what it was. Morphine? Absinthe? Quote

RALPHDEI Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Besides him being an arrogant A hole his window rubber sucks Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 You mean Edgar Allan? Come to think of it, maybe Andy B. could use a steady diet of opium and laudanum. Quote

I recently read a book that I bet I tried to read about 5 times before I finially got to the point of finishing the book..I am glad I did..the author is a member of this forum...I find reading on scale with most other tasks..if you do not have the proper mindset..it is going to be a drag...tomorrow is another day..another point of view/outlook on the world Quote
Young Ed Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I recently finished 6 men who created the auto industry. It was interesting but not suspensful to pull me in to read it fast. Took me a couple months of reading here and there. Since then I have finished the next 2 John Sandford Prey series books. I cruise through those in a day or two. Quote
