It was and atleast in MN still is illegal to enter a car from the street. That and probably a cost savings of only having one lock was the reason

Yes, it came that way. The idea was to lock the drivers door by pushing the door handle in the reverse direction (from the inside), then slide across the seat and exit through the passenger door and then lock the passenger door from the outside. Reverse that procedure for entry. Interestingly, trucks made with a right hand side steering wheel have the door lock on the opposite side, or so I've heard.

Those of you who daily drive your trucks, have any of you put lock on the driver's side, if so how?

The latch assemblies are different, left and right. The Driver's side one doesn't have the part that the outside lock connects to. Would the cars use the same latch assemblies? I'm gonna guess not.
