Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hi, my name is Carl Lohn,I'm 12 years old.I'm the proud new owner of my 1947 Dodge Business Coupe. It is a project car that I am working on. We are wanting to take it to some shows when we get it running. I want to restore it to perfect condition so it would be just like new. I will probably be asking a lot of questions on the forum. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hay Carl; Welcome aboard. I was 12 years old when I got my first Plymouth. Ask away on any questions you have and you will get more responses than you can imagine. You need to keep panning gold to defer the costs of this project Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Welcome Carl, I can see it now... 4 years from now you show up for your driver's license test in a '47 Dodge... The look on the examiner's face should be priceless. You've got quite a project there. These guys are a great source of information, and spare parts. You'll do well getting to know thid bunch. Merle Quote
PatS.... Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hey Carl, great choice for a first car!!! With all the guys here helping, you will be ready for your test in the Dodge as Merle says. None of your friends will have such a cool car, that's for sure. Welcome to the best forum on the 'net. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Off to a good start. Check out this picture of me I was probably about 16. I'm the one on the hood/grill. Dodges must be built tough! The dodge in the pic is now brush painted yellow and used for general work around the yard at my parents cabin. Parts of it have been used to fix my own 46 pickup and my dads 40 plymouth pickup. Somewhere along the line I helped with an engine swap and a 3spd to 4spd swap to Anyway enjoy the time working on it. I imagine you've got Dad or someone helping out. Listen to what they say and soak up the knowledge. If you get frustrated(you will at some point) go onto something else and come back later. Quote
Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Author Report Posted December 22, 2008 Don and Merle, I have the back tires off and need to get the front tires off today so we can get new tires on it to drag it home. The three sided tires(one flat side) are 6.50x16.What size 16 tire do we need:confused: .There are a bunch of used tires there but all with a P or LT in front. All the 6x16 tires we find are rotten. Thanks, Carl Quote
Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Author Report Posted December 22, 2008 Pat S... and Young Ed Thanks for the welcome.Off for Christmas break so we are going to work on it as much as possible. Merry Christmas, Carl Quote

Thanks, Carl Just to get it home 16" or 15" off a dodge/plymouth into at least early 80's should fit some maybe you can borrow some wheels off a friend or neighbors truck. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Otherwise for radials either a P or LT will work just to roll around on. You'll need one that ends in R16. Not sure on the other #s but you'll have to try and find some rather skinny tires. A google search or a call to a tire store should get you some tires that will be close. Otherwise some other rims with decent junkyard tires will be a good bet. Quite a few ford car rims fit too. Quote
greg g Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hey Carl, Welcome aboard. When I was 13 my cousin gave me a 52 plymouth that was running and had a decent interior. I drove it as a field car for a couple years, then started making improvements. Whe I got my license, 2 days after I turned 16, I got it registered and insured and drove it to work and school for two years. It was the worst car in the school parling lot but it beat riding the buss by miles. If you want some inspiration for your project, check member Dwight Petcols profile page. He lives in Utah and has a very nice Dodge Business coupe. Before you do much, read all you can regarding Dodge's use of "fluid Drive" The All Par site has a lot of good info. Do a site search for transmission when you get to the All Par site. Have fun. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 In order to get it home you can use many ford or chrysler wheels as they will fit. Any neighbors who can loan you there spare tire/wheel for long enough to drag the car home? Quote
Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Author Report Posted December 22, 2008 I Like your car! Love Carl Lohn Quote

You should be able to get a set very cheap if you tell them why you need them. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hey Carl, Welcome aboard. That Dodge will make a fabulous car for you and will be worth the effort. You'll learn a lot along the way and will be justifiably proud of your Dodge when you drive it. Good luck. Enjoy the journey. Robin (UK) Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hi Carl, welcome to the forum. Do you happen to have a store that deals in used tires in your area? Sometimes they have reasonable priced tires. A lot of late model cars have used 16" tires the past few years. Or, sometimes salvage yards have such things. Do you happen to know anyone in your town who has old Chrysler product cars.......they might have some spare tires and/or wheels they would loan for starters.......just to get the vehicle home and give you a bit more time to shop. james curl Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Hi Carl, welcome to the forum. The truck stop across from Wal Mart might have some used pick up tires. I have not been back to Brady since we moved my Mother In Law to Georgetown, but do not recall many places to buy used tires. The Muffler shop one block off the square used to have tires to if I remember correctly. Look for something in the P-205/215 size range if you can find them. I think 235's might work on the back but I think the fronts would rub on the tie rod. Quote
randroid Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Carl, Welcome to the loony bin. Along with what everyone else has said or asked, is that sprayer in the front seat stock? -Randy Quote
Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Author Report Posted December 22, 2008 Randy and everybody, Got several more sprayers in the trunk also.Came with the car .Got the car from my godfather that passed away in March. The daughter told me to take her for a ride when I got it running.Total cost on the car so far---$38.00. We are taking 23 tires (all free) of different sizes to the truck stop to get them mounted on the five rims.Hope some of them will work. Carl Carl Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Carl, looks like you got a life-long friend there. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Don't get in a hurry, do it right the first time and you won't have to do it again. Your Godfather did you a great favor. Make him proud. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 If the tires don't hold air as tubeless, simply put in tubes. Make sure the inside of the rims are fairly smooth. You can get by with slightly different sizes as long as they are 16". Quote
PatS.... Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 How about some inspiration? One of the very nicest Bizzy Coupes you'll ever see, belongs to forum member Dwight Pectol. Several more nice ones here on the forum as well. Quote
Bill Ford Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Welcome Carl, you have done good. That can be made a fun car plus a thing of beauty. You are lucky and you will learn a lot from working on this car. Don't hesitate to ask questions, there are a lot of knowledge from a great group of guys on this forum. Best of luck and Merry Christmas. Quote

Carl Carl Carl; My dad bought me my first Plymouth (the picture is both my dad and the Plymouth taken in the early 1960's) and paid thirty five bucks for it. Good to know there is not much inflation these days;) Quote
Carl Lohn Posted December 22, 2008 Author Report Posted December 22, 2008 We struck out.Me and my dad went to the truck stop and they would not mount the tires even though we had plenty sizes to choose from:confused: .They said they could not mount a 8 inch tire on a 4 inch rim.My dad argued with them but it was cold and they were lazy:mad: .We went to the other used tire place down the road and they said no problem to get the tires on the rims. Problem was they were moving and were not going to be opened up until after Christmas:( .Maybe I can start cleaning the sprayers, chain saw and critters out of it.Really had my heart set on getting it home:( :( Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 22, 2008 Report Posted December 22, 2008 Carl; Patience is a virtue. Use some of it now. I am impressed with your computer savvy. It appears the educational system of today teaches current technology and you have learned a lot. There were no computers and limited electronic calculators when I was twelve years old. Color television was in its infancy. You need to give some thought to being the Viceroy to Young Ed (who has inspirations to becoming the future Plymouth Owners Club President). I am sure you and Young Ed can coach each other to success! Glad you found this forum and keep posting the progress of your project. Quote
