Thanks to both Shel and Ed for the water pump grease posts, my pump had started crying just ever so slightly, I went with the marine grease from wally world and the squeaking has been silenced.

Now for some squeaking of my own, how often do you need to grease the pump? Mileagewise.

Since I won't be worrying about a concours resto, could it just be replaced with a later model that is zerk free? Or are there advantages that would sway towards retention of said pump?

Grease is the word!:D

PS. Is there a problem with grease hardening if the car is not regularly driven?

to quote the book it is once a month or every 1000 miles..this is not in the water pump section of the repair manual nor is it on the maintenance chart..but is listed under 1000 miles service under lubrication section...page 309 begins the schedule, page 310 gives the instructions

If it aint broke dont fix it. Your zerk equipped pump should last for years. If and when it fails then you can go zerk less.

Thank you for the advice, nothing is broke not going to fix it, want to know my options. Napa? What year did zerkless pumps start? Does a replacement pump from auto parts store come with a zerk?

Don would you like a original pump, I have one for you if you want it.

Frankie;

Thanks but no thanks. I also have my original (rebuildeable) pump. And my car is not ever going to compete for originality points with my hot rod modifications.

All three of my flatties' water pumps are zerk free and I like it that way. Let the antifreeze do the lubricating and there is no mess and no fuss.

Neil, that would be bad. I just meant that the pumps are lubricated the way ones are on the new cars. No maintenance is what I like. There are enough zerks on the rest of the car!!

Neil, now you are in a fantasy world! However, if wives were as low maintenance as the old Mopars, they might get taken out more often!:P

Now who's dreaming?

No maintenance is definitely the good life! What would happen if wives were as low maintenance as an old mopar?

Neil;

As much as I like it when forum folks use there real name same as you do I suggest you now go by the nick-name of NEIL HALFTRACK:D :D :D It fits well with your past being a Soldger and such.........

Probably want to lube the pump maybe at least once a year if the car

isn't driven much. If I tried to lube mine once each 1000 miles, it would

only get done once every three or four years.....as not many miles are

racked up on the ol car usually. Haven't had much trouble with the pump

over the past 30 years.

My truck shelled one right away within maybe 75 miles. Of course since it was under construction it took me about a year to get that far so no warranty :( I have always wondered if it was maybe because I forgot to lube it when it was new. I think my car needs one now too from the crash :(

My water pump has a zerk fitting but it's turned in toward the pulley and I can't get the fitting on to grease, If I turn the zerk fitting do you think it would turn without breaking ? Have a good Holiday Jim

Grease zerks are threaded into the pump housing. If it will not turn clockwise turn it counterclockwise far enough to get the grease gun on it. About a half a shot is all that is required. If you pump it too full of grease you will blow out the pump seal.

Per Plymouth Service Manual:

Apply until grease is visible on groove between fan pully hub and front bushing.

However I am with Don that a little less grease with a more frequent service period would be best all around. Now we know the reason for all the undercoatney at the base of the front engine mount.
