n1gzd_plymouth Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 My project from this weekend: Quote
Bingster Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Okay, so what type paint did you use? I recall reading somebody on this site who used POR15 aluminum paint, and said it lasted a long time. That's what I intend to use on mine. Quote

I recall reading somebody on this site who used POR15 aluminum paint, and said it lasted a long time. That's what I intend to use on mine. I just used plasti-cote engine enamel. I would have preferred to use Hirsch auto paint but I was too impatient to wait until I got the paint because it is getting colder and colder and I wanted to patin before it got too cold. As it was it was kind of moist day to paint. I hope it cured ok. Rebecca Quote
greg g Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Looks like you were draped for brain surgery!!! Looks good. How are your finishing the accessories?? Did you find you bolt covers??? Some one noted before you can find them at Truck Stops in there store areas. A set of woven fabric covered spark plug wires will look good against the black. They can be found at the antique Ford places. Quote

I found some bolt covers (they were almost too cheap so I don't know yet if they are good): http://www.thehotrodcompany.com/shopnow/show_item.asp?product_id=91010115 Rebecca Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Rebecca.......some acorn nut covers fit a tiny bit better than others. Some are just a liiitle more snug.....that's the kind I prefer but it's hard to tell till you try putting it on the bolt. I think part or all of mine came from a truck stop that sells accessory items. Not very expensive. Quote
n1gzd_plymouth Posted November 10, 2008 Author Report Posted November 10, 2008 yeah, that is the look that I am going for. Yours look pretty much like the ones that I ordered. Hopefully they will fit. they were not expensive either (.50 each). Rebecca Quote
plymouth49 Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 My project from this weekend: Do you have another shot of the engine that shows it all more clearly? Just curious - what made you select black? It looks great. I dislike the factory silver paint. It never looks good and it does not age well. Quote
Normspeed Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 I had to modify 2 or 3 of the covers on my 53 motor. One was too high and the accelerator linkage hit it, couldn't get more than 1/3 throttle. I ground the top flat on a grinding wheel. Also had to cut off the tops of the one where the battery cable bolts to the head bolt and where the throttle return spring hooks to a head bolt. Yours may be different though. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 Just curious - what made you select black? Black may be the correct color for a 36 Plymouth. I am not sure when they switched to silver. My guess is Tod Fitch can tell us. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) Don, he said it did not age well..my 54 engine was original silver and for the age..still looked very good...of course I have since freshed up the appearance..I mean why not..the entire front metal was removed for painting Edited May 20, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote

LOL - my Yogi Berra-ism for today. I like the idea of painting the block glossy black. Polished or chrome highlights would set it off. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 it really does not matter what color...if you are not going for POC points..ownership is the only real qualifier in chosing the color..that being said, remember...most engine paint is ruined from within...cast iron is porous..oil vapor will seep through the metal casting to the just below the paint surface and cause it to lift..regardless of paint used...this is the same action the ole cast iron cooking skillet goes through and the requirement to cook these cherry red in a fire to clean them is just not something we can do with an engine block..any seasoned block will have x-amount of oil within...just keep this in mind though porus does not mean it will leak like a sieve OK... Young Ed Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 Don is close. The 36s came either black with a silver head or just silver. Quote
