greg g
If you look closely at Ed's posted pic, you will see that there is another special head bolt at the back of the engine. It has a fitting for the throttle return spring to be anchored in. These changes of ground location, throttle actuation rods, fuel pumps, glass strainer bowls, throttle spring location etc, internal and external coolant bypass, heater valves, and others seems to be haphazard in application. Kinda like what ever parts were in the basket that day got used. Just work with what the MOPAR parts gremlins delivered.
Young Ed
Yes for reference I should mention that is a 1951 ply engine. I believe all the 46-48 cars had the ground under the generator not on the head.
pflaming
I cut my tractor 'eye teeth' on D model John Deeres. Dad and two, a '38 and a '45 with starter. If we had the choice we took the '38, easier to start even without the starter. I had an older brother by two years, Dod had matching D's, plows, one-ways, 'harrows' and we always worked together. I really did not realize until lately just how large the D model was, the tires are 60 inches tall, and I was a 95# kid driving this large tractor. Dad had a lot of faith in his boys. Great memories of tilling 600 acres with my older brother, could tell lots of stories. PF
bigred48
I'm pretty sure that I don't have the special head bolt on my car but I will look closer this weekend. I haven't had any problems the way that it is hooked up now, should I bother to move it? would I need to Re torque my head?

Tim Frank
What a great point by Maurice Wade! There is a huge sector that supplies new and used parts for old agricultural machinery. The AG machinery manufacturers bought engines from many sources including Dodge and Plymouth. I have an old fire pump that runs on an L-head engine by Continental. I once did a model search to see if i could find parts ended up at a ag machinery parts supplier because Masset Harris/Ferguson used that engine in a bunch of tractors. That said, I had a conversation today with Jake at Wisconsin Tractor Parts a huge salvage yard and he figured that they would probably be able to supply many parts for many of out engines. (Thought I'd make that call before posting this.) I attach the link to the main operation of which WTP is one salvage yard.. There would probably be some challenges to matching part numbers/ID from the car listings to ag side, but heck every additional source helps in the battle. http://www.tractorpartsasap.com/
