Death Dodger Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Hello everyone! I used to post here on the old forum a few years ago as Donniej. About 3 years ago I parked my 1940 Dodge sedan. No winterizing, no nothing... I just ran out of time for it. Lately I haven't been able to stop thinking about it though, so I went back to the garage and got to work. The tank was rusty before so I pulled it and decided it needs replacing. I cleaned the carb, filter and fuel pump. I also bled the brakes and gave it a new battery. After charging the battery, oiling the cylinders, changing the oil and rigging up a gas can to the fuel pump; I gave it a squirt of carb cleaner and cranked it over. In 1/2 a revolution it fired up and idled strong. It did however smoke like a house on fire for a good 15 minutes! I thought the neighbors would come running out but they didn't Next trip is to the junk yard to find a gas tank that's "close enough" and to weld on the fittings. After that, I'll check out the brakes and give the front axle a much needed rebuild. Here's some pics... Something else that needs fixing, a loose nut behing the steering wheel Quote
RobertKB Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Good to see you got your interest back. Sometimes a time away from a project gets you re-invigorated to get working on it. Sounds like you have some good ideas and it will be great to see you get your car back on the road. I believe there is a thread very recently about new gas tanks and suppliers of them. It would be worth checking out. Good luck! Quote
greg g Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 someone mentioned a while back that 46 through 48 Ford tanks are close enough, available from most early Ford pard places for relatlively cheap. this one from the hotrodfactory for 215.00 Quote
Young Ed Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I just saw one at bob drake thats on sale for 175. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 This is the poly tank that PlyDo use to sell for the P15. Looks a little different than the Ford one. By the way, now that you mentioned the $215 price, that is what PlyDo charged for mine, plus shipping. That will bring the total cost to around $250. Quote
GeorgeLeonard Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 Is it true that all the battery needed after sitting 3 three years was a charge and it was good to go? What brand of battery is that because I want one? Quote
GeorgeLeonard Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 Oh, I see now that it is a new battery. I guess I just skipped over that part. Sorry. Quote
40phil41 Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 I wondered what happened to you . We corresponded off post for a while about our '40 Dodges and then you seemd to have vanished. You may recall my red '40 4 dr. Very glad your interest is renewed. Phil Quote
pflaming Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 How could you lose interest in a car like that? Enjoy your second honeymoon. Quote
Death Dodger Posted October 22, 2008 Author Report Posted October 22, 2008 How could you lose interest in a car like that? How about this? I had to take a few years to learn how to brew biodiesel from used cooking oil... and to make all natural soap from the byproducts Quote

What brand of battery is that because I want one? The battery was a year old. I pulled it and refinished the battery box last summer. The battery just sat, luckily it took a charge. Quote
