Bummer Lee! Gravity is usually a downer. Looking at the pic it looks like as possible save if maybe you found a wide washer, maybe the bolt could hold it if you did need to use it as a spare. Although it would be an annoying gamble as manifold for me are a pain to swap out if the bolt couldn't keep a tight seal. Hope you get the problem solved before the big winter unthaw. Only 3 weeks until daylight savings!

Thanks gang! Your right Mackster, its like a match made in heaven! Bukowski is excited about getting to ride in the convertible every day. Ford Tauruses just are not engineered for Great Dane passengers! Can't wait to put a Peach State tag on the car! Pine trees? Seems like you can't win. Around here there's Red Baron elite squad of birds that have laser guided sights for my car when they poop. Now it sounds like I'll be trading in bird poop for pine tree sap! Merle and Ed, don't worry, not rolling out until June 1st (getting hitched on May 29th), so weather pending we should at least have a few weeks window to meet up and enjoy some sunshine! BTW Merle, did you get the tran clutch plate done? I don't know about keeping the winter gloves. When I went down there for the interview everyone was freaking out about the snow that was predicted for the day. The gal at the hotel wouldn't let me walk a half mile that day, she must've thought I'd get frozen in the great blizzard of 2010! She called a cab when I wasn't looking! Bob your more than welcome to head down to Savannah whenever you feel like it. Seems like there's a cruise-in every month of the year! I'll make you a nice steak if you come by. Can't wait to use the grill without having to shovel a path to it!

I can't believe it! In three months time I'll be driving the Chrysler in Savannah, GA! Still wrapping my head around the fact that I can finally toss my winter gloves! So for all my future fellow Georgians (is that what you guys are called? We're Wisconsinites up here), is it true you can use a GA license plate you find at a flea market and use it on your car as long as the year of the plate matches the year of your car? If so, anyone actually do this? Just seems too cool to be true... Checked on a local car club's website down there, just wanted to make sure it was accurate before I start scouring through bins at flea markets this spring! Anyway, can't wait to meet all you fine folk down there. Will finally have my weekends off so I can start going to car shows, picnics, and drive-ins. Boo up! ~ Adam

Yeah, Ed, that's normal. Had issues with a Dell year's ago. Even the refurb one busted too, but warranty date stayed the same. Tend not to spend a lot on electronics these days, usually I look to buy at the lower end of the price spectrum ever since Sony and a few others let me down. Hope the refurb lasts a long time!

Who Drives Their Old Mopars on Freeways At Night

I've been driving the stock 49 Chrysler (M6 tranny) on the freeway for the last three years. Never had a problem. My only area of concern is getting on the freeway with short on ramps, takes the thing a while to hit full speed, but am always above 45 mph by the time I'm merging. Night driving hasn't been a problem except for off freeway common busy city streets. Had a few people roll down their windows to tell me my brake lights are out (which of course they aren't, just stock 6 volt, which I may change over to 12v). So I'm always keeping an eye on who's behind me. But I usually coast to stops anyways. Stay in the right lane, if the freeway is not busy. Once it hits a busy section no one is doing 60+ anyways, so I'm usually riding in the left lane passing everyone anyways. Always feels good when I pass a Corvette stuck in the middle lane. Oh, and I always leave a car length for every 10 mph I drive. The one thing I remembered from Driver's Ed. -

Not to hijack this thread or anything but I'm having the same issue with the 94 Jeep Wrangler. Accelerate and I get a back massage from the seat vibrating, let off the gas and the noise almost disappears. If I'm on the freeway doing 50 it rattles, throw it into neutral and rev the engine no noise. So by that account the good guess is U-Joint? I could see that being an issue since the car is jacked up with those huge tires and original rear-end. Problem is that its really cold out at the moment and no garage to work on. Are U-Joints hard and time consuming to put in? Can it wait till it at least mid-Feb when we get a day in the upper 40's or am I likely to find the drive shaft dragging on the concrete if I keep driving it?

Joe, I couldn't agree more with ya'. Don't feel guilty about it either. I like to tackle things myself, but when it comes to something that's easy to break and hard to replace sometimes its wise to admit there's some things you don't want to learn (at least the hard way, that is!).

Sorry Merle, wish I knew an answer for ya'. Does the shop manual say anything about grinding for repairs? Mine's stored in the garage otherwise I'd look. I do have the 1956 Motor's Auto Repair manual. Doesn't say anything regarding grinding, but does mention the fluid drive seal removal and regular clutch service. I can't scan it at the moment (working on a computer where have the drivers are missing), but let me know and I'll get you a copy of it tomorrow.

John that's a great photo! Thanks for sharing. I'd never seen the license plate mounted like that. I found a bent license plate bumper guard for mine. I'm forever on the hunt for one that hasn't been rammed out of alignment. So what' s the story for the Chrysler? Your first car? Was it a head turner back in the day? Did you have the fluid drive option? That is the greatest invention and curse! Every now and then when I'm in the Jeep I get the Chrysler habit and forget to put the clutch in. Ker-plunk! Sigh, I wish it was warm here, would drive that car everyday if I could! -

Thanks, that's a 48 or 49 first series though. Cool ad! I like how the gentleman has gloves. I'm envious, couldn't find a matching set this year, got two different winter gloves, but at least its a left and right. Thanks for taking the time to upload it, I'm sure quite a few people who own that model will be saving that for desktop wallpaper! -

It's not that much. Wanna say like 7 bucks for a 3 pack or something like that. Picked up a few sheets at a rummage sale for like 50 cents. Wal-mart, Michael's, Ben Franklin, etc. will have 'em. There is another method (probably more durable). I think you send the image files to a company and they print its right on the fabric (saw it at a camera specialty store). It felt soft and flexible, not waxy like the iron-ons do. Whatchya' thinking of making?

Well congrats on your new ride. Perhaps next year Santa can send a few of his elves over to finish the Plym? Just one thing to think about, the driving the Plymouth instead of the Vette will probably save you big money. After all, how many of us have gotten speeding tickets in these old mopars? Neil, that is the best analogy I've ever heard! I'm a stock guy myself. Keep the darn thing 6V because that's the way it was built dagnabbit! But then you brought up the darn battery analogy. 20 bucks says my batter has more oomph than the original. I'm sold on the upgrade issue now. God forbid you ever go into sales, your persuasion is unbeatable!

Wow, ya' learn something everyday! If this was a game show, I would have bet the whole jackpot that it wouldn't be fuel injected! You guys are officially on my "call a friend" list for a game show. We'll all split the winnings, sound like a plan? For all I know that car is all original. The owner of the DeSoto is actually driving the Edsel. That car was neat to see. Never really got to peer around the dash before. Molly was actually growing quite fond of the Edsel. 750 magazines! My local library would be envious! If you happen to be flipping through issues from 1949 and see an ad for the 1949 Chrysler Windsor (or New Yorker) convertible or sedan I wouldn't mind a pic. But don't go out of your way to do. Hate for you to get a paper cut or something sorting through all those pages! Really appreciate the offer! Yeah, no real hurry on this project. Hoping to get in done in Fall though (looks like no top for the car for awhile:( ). Hoping to get a wedding shot with the car for the quilt. -

Hey gang, this cold weather and Jim's quilt has inspired me to pester my mum to fire up the sewing machine and make a quilt for the Chrysler. By any chance does anyone have any 49 Chrysler Ads they could do some high resolution scans of? I've checked http://www.oldcarbrochures.com ( a great site by the way if you've never been), and they only have the one I have. Was thinking of doing a couple of advertisement pics, family pics with the car, and the photo's from the Reminisce magazine photo shoot. Oh, I found those pics got posted online finally, here's the cover: Molly and I are sitting in the beautiful Desoto. I wish you could zoom in, the car was gorgeous! All original interior...even had clear plastic covering on the seats! Rubber mat floor was pristine! And the proudest moment so far of my life, having the car make the centerfold! The only dissapointing thing about the cover was that the 57 had modern rims and a fuel injected logo. The woody was also modernized, but I was (sort of) surprised the editor never picked up on it. Not that its a big deal or anything, but you'd think many readers would be, "hmm...":)

Thanks for the explanation Tim! I did have both tested. Battery was good, forgot what the generator was putting out, but come spring I'll check it again, see what current its putting out. I put in new brushes two summers ago. Perhaps I need to double check how clean I got the armature and re-flash the generator. Its only done this to me once since I redid the generator, back had the car idling after I had a quick charged the battery enough to get it started. Had it idling for about 25 minutes and clonked out. I hate winter, wish I could be in the garage right now... Thanks again Tim!

I'm sort of stumped in my own ignorance here. On two occasions the Chrysler has quit running on me when the battery is low. I get that the generator doesn't charge when idling, but how come if i leave the car idling until the battery eventually gets really low the car sputters and dies, even if I try to give it more fuel? For some reason I thought old cars could run without the batteries (minus lights and such). Is my generator just not efficient enough, VR stuck at times, or does the coil require more draw than the generator can put out? Just thinking if I need to add another project to the list come spring (which is hopefully right around the corner!).
