Well, new filter and nothing changed. Took it to a trusted mechanic, he'd bet his money (or my money) that its the fuel pump or fuel pressure sensor (i'm sure that's not the techinical name, my mind is fried). Unfotunatly he quoted me 500 bucks to do the job. The Jeep won't fit in the garage, so hoping the future father-in law will let me use his heated garage. Need to go to the library and see if they have a manual I can check out. I really wasn't planning on putting any money into the Jeep, only going to have it for 7 months... Thanks for the link on the jeep forums, plan on joining over there. Going to go through and clean every sensor before I tackle the fuel pump. Holding off on the catalytic converter at the moment, that part is around 80 bucks. Never had to replace an in tank pump, hopefully it goes easier than some of my other projects have been lately! Thanks gang, you're the best!

Thanks for the tip on the Idle Air controller. I'd do the code reader, but no indicators popped up on the dash. The speedo is off with the over sized tires, gauge said 45 mph, I figure its slow by about 7 mph judging from traffic. Picked up the filter for 12 bucks, so hopefully that'll do the trick. Timing just couldn't be worse, this is the busiest next five days for me... Don't have a vacuum gauge, is there another "poor man's" trick to catalytic converters to check 'em? Gonna work swap out the filter tonite and spray down the throttle and Idle controller and with the injector cleaner, figure that won't take more that 45 minutes (hopefully), and see if that does the trick. Thanks for all the tips guys. I'll let ya' know if anything does the trick.

That is a cool looking Jeep! Murphy's Law kicked in. Today was the first day in legal ownership, got plates and all the fun stuff. Drove it. Left the parking lot tonite and stalled it when backing up (I'm used to the fluid drive!). So I go to start it. No go. Cranks, won't turn over. 20 minutes I try everything trying to get it to go, thinking maybe there's an odd trick. Try it in 1st with clutch, nuetral, even buckling my seatbelt thinking maybe there's a million in once chance this was some demo in 1994 with a safety feature or something. Finally turns over after a good rainfall starts. Get on the freeway, won't go faster than 52 mph....Got the thing floored in fifth, no acceleration, no studdering, just like its at its top speed. RPMs aren't crazy or anything. I was thinking fuel filter. Wouldn't be fuel pump right? Got any ideas? Engine and components are stock, 98K on it...

Thanks for the tip about the width on the tires. That's one of the reasons we were okay with getting the lifted Jeep with the large tires, thinking we wouldn't be held hostage to the weather and the city plows...Oh well, the plans of mice and men... =)

Andy's didn;t have the metal wrap guard around it (forgot what it's called). Don't know of anyone that sells it like that, though you could maybe wrap it yourself, or go to a local spring shop maker and they could press the metal to seal it. I'm assuming Plyms had that on their spring, my 49 Chrysler did.

Crazy, what a coincidence. My Great Dane at the blob last night...sigh...The movie was based on an actual event. Wanna say in Texas. Rained one night the next day this glob stuff was everywhere. Its a slime mold called Physarum polycephalum. Pretty cool, its a single cell organism that can grow almost to a meter in diameter. Usually found in damp dark places like woods. Anyways, had some in a petri dish. Apparently if you eat it it makes you thirsty. Bukowski has been downing water like crazy!

I've seen quite a few of them over the years for sale. if it sold for 8.5K that wouldn't be a bad deal, but I've seen them in pretty good shape go for the 16k range. There's an online article from Hemmings on the Dodge Wayfarer.

I've known a few gentlemen with prostate cancer and try to keep up with research and progress. A large percentage of men will get prostate cancer, and for many it grows soooooooo slow something else year's later will be the cause of their death. So while obviously be concerned for your pops, keep an optimistic attitude that the stats are in his favor. Do make sure he know's the pro's and con's of the treatment, power hungry's story is correct the inconstinence is a risk of some procedures as well as sexual ability. Hope all goes well!

I bought new leaf springs from Andy. Was cheaper that getting them made locally. My leaf springs were original. After replacing them I didn't notice a difference. My car sat for 30 years, so it hadn't seen a lot of miles (current ODO reading is 38K). The rubber bushings were dry, but didn't hear any squeaking nor see any wear to parts. Hope that two bits helps ya' make a decision. ALthough seems you're tackling this car at full speed, so you probably have everything done by now!

Tired of carpooling with the fiance since the demise of my beater car 2 months ago got us a 94 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Excited, no more having to shovel the car out in the morning to get to work in the winter. Milwaukee sometimes has flooded streets which I no longer need to worry about, as it's outfitted and has the snorkel accessory! I can't imagine driving that thing in water as it would probably float, the wheels are an inch short of being a yard high... Anyways, excited to have another Mopar in the fleet, grinned when I popped the hood and saw the Mopar manufacturers sticker. Gonna enjoy the excitement before gas prices rise and the tires go bald...

If you look in the Photo Gallery a while back I posted the wiring diagram for the 49-53 Chrys (under manuals or electrical or something like that). Not sure the anti-stall is listed in the diagram, but I imagine it would be referenced in there. The wiring harness should probably give ya' a good guess as where it goes, as there isn't a whole lot of play room on variations. Good luck, if you have trouble message again and I'll get out to the car with a camera.

Michael, some states had metal tags that "renewed" the plates each year. Here in Wisconsin they never manufactured a plate in 49, so I have 1947 plates with a metal "49" tag that goes on the plate. Don't know about NY, just giving ya' a heads up when shopping around. Took me two years to figure why I was never coming across an original 49 plate!

Yeah, keep yours eyes peeled at thrift stores and garage sales. Spread the word to friends and neighbors. Usually someone has one in a box somewhere. Used to make 8 tracks years ago, it was fun at the time. One of the heads was out of alignment though, so playing pre-recorded 8tracks had some audio bleed through on a few tracks. Let us know how it goes when you find one. Here's some on ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1311&_nkw=8+track+recorder&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Funny! Thanks for posting.

Thanks, looks like I'm doing okay. Yeah, I grew up in area where "standard" wasn't standard anymore, so my experience with manual transmissions has been on sports cars and the thrill of fast shifting rather than actual practical use in traffic!

So got a question for all the "old timers" out there. My M6 tranny instruction manual says to use high gear for most driving, save low gear for minimal use for inclines. I live in Wisconsin, so the glaciers took care of any mountains, our highest point is a hill with a chruch on top I do believe. So besides when I'm starting on a hill/incline, when do I shift into low gear? How steep are we talking if I'm already doing between 25-40 mph (the proper speeds for the OD in High Drive)? My low gear obviously prevents me from going most driving speeds, and shifting from High to Low requires me to significantly reduce speed. On a related note, will the car in Low gear shift from 1st to 2nd if on an incline. Only have one hill I hit on occasion and never seems to upshift... ~Adam

I bought a used 6 volt step-up off of eBay for $30 three years ago. has a little on/off switch on the box that I keep under my seat. Runs my stereo just fine (have it cranking out 50 watts to the two front speakers). Just be sure to keep it isolated from the rest of the car, as the metal on the car is positive ground and the step up will be a 12 v negative ground.

Last summer I was driving the Chrysler on the freeway and some ladies drove next to me and wrote "honk 4 boobs" on paper. Unfortunately my horn went out earlier that week. I did the polite thing and pressed the horn button (as to not offend them for their generous offer!), but of course no sound came out. They laughed and did a rather courteous flash! For a moment I was like Clark Griswald in his Wagon Queen Family Truckster!

Let's talk about brake lights! Specifically, on the 49 models, are the fins running lights and turn signal lights and the lights by the license plates the brake lights? Just curious, I got a super bright rear passenger fin light that is shining a lot brighter than the driver's, and when i tap brakes, it is the license plate red lights that kick in. Is this wired correctly, or should all four light up when the brake pedal is depressed? On a related side note, when idling, tap the brakes, headlights dim (a bit, not alot). The wires back there have never been redone before, but didn't know if the generator at idle should be able to juice all lights or if the dimming is a standard occurrance for you fellow Chrysler drivers (plym and dodge owner's, don't mean to exclude ya', just didn't know if the Chrysler's were different). Thanks gang!~Adam

I know absolutely zilch about the proper adhesion of chrome plating, but if its "chipping" off with little effort, I would definitely take it back since its been only a few months. If it was chipped off by accidentally scraping it with a flat head screw driver I would then just call about the best way to prevent flaking from the surrounding area. Good luck, hopefully it won't be a frustrating encounter with the gentleman who did the chroming.

Here's Your Chance, Johnny Cash' Car For Sale
adam_knox replied to Norm's Coupe's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I think this was at the Iola car corral...Either that or this model is taking off and going into mass production (fingers crossed!). I just think it needs a make-over, the white/black with the red Batman "ka-pow" accents are what's holding me back from jumping on it...How much would a plaid or polka dot with racing stripes paint job be? -
For those pondering a new top ain't cheap! I took the '49 in to get an estimate, and its around 3K. Granted I don't have a pattern to follow for the top boot and my tacking strip needs some touch up, it'll probably be around $2K at most shops. Still would be nice to have though!

Perusing on craigslist instead of being productive, found these two in in the Milwaukee area. A 49 Coronet ($4500) and a 49 Plymouth ($1200). Got excited for a minute, as I thought the Plymouth was my old car...alas, it 'tis not. Wish I had enough time, money, garage space, and reason to drive so many cars...Would love to have a whole warehouse of old cars! http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/1300395822.html http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/1301481165.html

Source for brake drums & misscel parts
adam_knox replied to 50 Dodge Lug Nut's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Hey Frank, Advanced Auto Parts listed brake parts for my 49 Chrysler, but they had to search under 1950 (same at Napa). Perhaps you can look in a Motor's guide and see what years are the same for your Dodge (guessing Plymouth cylinders will fit as well). If you don't have a Motor's Guide, let me know, I can look it up and get back to you. As for one stop shop, don't know about springs or other parts at chain stores. But if they let you walk around back you can find most things will fit with your original equipment. They should stock the flexible brake hose for sure. Good luck!~Adam
