  1. If you look at frequency of repair records of any consumers surveys and you will see that no German vehicle compares to the dependibilty of the Asian manufacturers. Overall, the only area where German vehicles are at the top is in cost of ownership. My old Mopars have hauled many krautburners off to the big parking lot in the sky. German vehicles succeed best in stoking the ego of their owners.
  2. You're just being mean now, but it would be fun to watch!
  3. I would suggest you sit down and hold those little angels and not worry about your truck. However, if you insist, Missing and backfiring thru the carb can mean its running lean. Change your fuel filter and see what happens. Start with the cheap stuff first. At any rate, big congratulations, you are so lucky.
  4. Drain the block at the petcock on the side below the distribtor. Or, just punch the freeze plug and the block it will drain itself very rapidly. Kidding aside, the block should remain full of coolant at all times.
  5. Chipdeson, 48 Plymouths did not come with whitewall tires so there really is no "stock size" whitewall. Yes, I am a nitpicker.
  6. You win, Bob, the windows are now flat aluminum. On to the wheel wells.
  7. Forum total, I think.
  8. Welcome to the forum, Russell. It's good to see another old Dodge getting back on the road. Use the search function and it will answer most of your questions. Clunk-o-matics are fun, aren't they? Well, aren't they?
  9. Keep in mind that will also show play in the oil pump drive gear and the tang to pump slot.
  10. Take off a valve cover and watch the valves for movement while you bump the crank over with the fan. There shouldn't be a lot of "play" between the movement of the crank and the movement of the cam and valves. You might get an idea of how much slack there is, if any. I can do it, but I can't explain it.
  11. Now you can't say you know nothing because now you know about loose connections, and this is just the beginning.
  12. Ben, bid on the next one that shows up. Give it to your Dad. If it makes him half as happy as I am with this one, you will have done a good thing.
  13. It is made of diecast potmetal. It has some slight damage to the roof and hood, which I will not mess with. I found a good color for it, and later tonight I will try some detailing. What do you all think the windows should be, black, silver, grey, or something else? The tires will remain natural rubber white. Yeah, Bob, my "collection" has gotten way out of hand.
  14. 205/70x15 in the front and 225/75x15 in the back.
  15. It sounds like its really low on oil.
  16. Right now all I can do is sit here staing at it afraid to do anything. The hard rubber tires are still in great shape, but dirty. Again, I am afraid to mess with them because they look and feel brittle. I think I'll just look at it for a while longer. I've screwed up enough good stuff to know when to back off.
  17. This came in the mail today. I don't know for certain yet, but I believe it came from an ebay sale won by my son and sent direct to me. Its been painted by someone so I will probably not be able to resist a little restoration. All four tires are good.
  18. Thanks for the info, Fred. I am sending it to him. He and I have discussions about the wisdom of using everything from used motor oil to synthetic oils. He is just looking to avoid mixing small amouts to use and the hassle involved. But then, he owns Wartburgs and is sort of asking for trouble. Yes, he's sending them here for when they return to Virginia, if they do. I have a suspiciion that they they could end up in my garage. Thanks again.
  19. Cpt. Fred, are there any stations around that still sell pre-mixed fuel? My son needs to move two Wartburgs from Budapest to Hamburg.
  20. I'm not trying to make trouble here, but I kind of like the red rings around the aluminum.
  21. Perhaps you could find some a touch bigger?
  22. LaSalle was a French explorer who traveled up the Mississippi, crossed to lake Michigan and went through the great lakes to the Atlantic about 1680. I think.
  23. 1.1 hours is 66 minutes.
  24. Many congratulations to you! No way you can forget the date, can you?
  25. Congratulations to you, Don and Lisa. You've got a good start there. Louise and I will be celebrating 47 years on the 12th.
