They make an oval stem, usually has a nut on a threaded stem. A good tire shop, or one in farm country should be able to help. You can get them online, too. I've "painted" the outside with a product someone here recomended, Owatrol, which is a clear sealer said to kill rust. It looks pretty good, but was too shiny for my taste. I've worked it over with 0000 steel wool, and I think it will be fine. Just for the record, if I was doing it over, I would add a second coat while it was still soft (within 2-3 days) so there would be more thickness as I worked the shine off. Some people use clear coat to do this, but of 3 I've personally seen, all have rust continuing to build and bleed under the clear coat. This product is supposed to chemically put an end to any more rusting. Time will tell.

Ok, got it off! Clockwise it is. Rather than drilling holes, etc. I used duct tape to get a good bite, made a t handle with it, and it worked. Part of my problem was, as I learned after it was off, was the part that has the 3 teeth, was rusty and resisting. Got my puller on, took a pretty good pull, but got the wheel off. Besides getting the wheel out of the way of painting, which I've accomplished, I wanted to clean and paint the tube the shaft goes through. I've now learned you can't get it over the shaft without loosening the steering box from the frame. That's a later tonight chore. Painting the cab is tomorrow's chore.

Thanks for the grommet link. Thought McMaster Carr would be my place, but the hole was bigger than I'd want. oh, Paul, the dash is empty. Completely. About ready to paint. All the works for the vent were rusted up, frozen and broken. Dash was very rusty. Will be in much better shape in s day or two.

Thanks. That was my guess, but it didn't come out. It does turn a fair distance, I guess it just needs some brute force - or would it be brute prying? Pretty frustrating - I bought a real puller made for these recently, not I can't get to the nut to use it!

Yes, Rhode Island Wiring. All checks out, looks good. Problem now is finding a new grommet for the hole in the firewall where it goes through.

Just got my new wiring harness. They recommend you compare it wire for wire with the old one before starting. This will be fun!

Trying to get the steering wheel off, of course, first step is removing the horn button. As I recall, you push it in and turn it to get it off of some fingers. It's not like I haven't done this before, on this vehicle even, but nothing is letting loose trying to turn it either way. Searchs turned up nothing, so, does anyone recall which way it turns, clock wise or counter clock wise? If I know I'm going the right way I'll get violent with it. It is sort of pissing me off!

These tools are all well and good, I've used them for 50 years. But there is no access to use them.

Actually, until interstates were being started, some states had no general speed limits. Missouri first had statewide limits around 56-57. I recall my father was seriously looking at VW buses then, his rational being if he was going to have to drive slow he'd just as well have some room. In the end he bought a used 56 Chevy wagon and drove fast anyway.

There are several places that will rebuild our original parts with no issues, and usually for a lot less. I've walked into Unique in Jonesburg, Mo. and walked out 2 hours later with perfectly rebuilt pressure plate and clutch plate for under $100.

Just put a brand newly overhauled motor in this one. New wiring from Rhode Island should be here any day, got all new glass, rubber, channels, etc ready to go in. I put a clear sealer someone here recommended, (Owatrol, I think it was) and it will stay rusty but won't rust. It'll be about a month, it won't quite be a daily driver, but a frequent driver. And, it drives nice. Once I get my NOS 3:56 gears in, it'll be a long distance driver.

I drove my 1924 Dodge Brothers frequently in the summer. Seems to not be so much fun in the winter.

Until maybe late 60's it was very common to run back odometers. There were pros who made a circuit doing it at car lots. A key that it had been done was odometer numbers that don't line up correctly. When they used their picks and special tools it left that telltale sign. Notice how well the numbers line up - or, rather, don't. I wouldn't put much stock in the displayed mileage.

I had my left done about 6 years ago. Strange, because I'm right handed. It was bad enough that my fingers would have no feeling after 15 minutes of using my skidloader. it did take about 6 months to get back to anything resembling normal, with pain in the non affected fingers, and much discomfort. The surprise benefit is that my left thumb, which had so much pain that I thought was from authoritis that made it unusable, was completely cured. I asked the surgeon about that and he said often that happens, but is unpredictable so they don't mention it so they don't get your hopes up. my right hand has never had a problem, and of course, I use it many times the amount of my left.

Doesn't the same oil pump fit all the 23" and 25" motors?

This was taken through my windshield by one I paid about $60 for several years ago. If it interests you I can get the model tonight. It records about 12 hours on a little standard chip. Come see with a windshield suction cup mount.

Call Richard Losche, 573-874-1111. Ask him, that is about all he's done for 30 years. I expect he can do it cheaper and ship it to you. It'll work.

My local shop will make the whole shaft new for around $300. That is also what I paid for a new shaft with spicer u joints and a slip joint about 20 years ago in Austin texas. I'm guessing your biggest problem is you selected the wrong shop.

Both are safety glass. I think what you meant to ask was it tempered or laminated.

That's about what I expected. Used to be about $25 per glass, not now. He told me they were losing money at $275. Told him he didn't have to worry losing any more.
