  1. Thanks! I will have a look next week, as Thanksgiving visits, and Christmas Trees are more pressing right now with a 9 and 12 year old, than Rear Oil Seals. I will look for that vent hole tonight. Tom
  2. Happy Thanksgiving1 I have a 1948 Chrysler Royal with a Left Rear Wheel Oil Seal Leak. Is there a special Tool to remove this Seal? Once the Drum is off how do you remove the Seal? Do I have to break down the Brakes/Remove them, or can I go straight to the Nuts that hold the Seal and remove them? Then of course how do I install the New Seal? Tom Skinner
  3. Rodney, Thanks for that clarification on Condensers, and Noise Suppressors. I used Autolite 86 plugs for a while gapped at .025, according to the manual for a 250.6 cu. in. C-38 Chrysler, but does anyone know if when using ACR45 Resistor plugs I should increase the plug gap? Then I should ask, to what gap? .30? or .35? Tom
  4. Central52, One easy way to time your engine after you static time it with the motor off, then start in and let it warm up, turn off the engine. Then hook up a vacumn gage to the intake manifold and start the start the motor, then loosen the distributor and turn it untill you get your highest reading on the Vacumn gage, then tighten the distributer bolt back again. This is called Dynamic Timing. The Gas Octanes are different from when your car was made, and I find the Specs on it in the manuel are "out the window now". If you do what I have just described to you,you will have timed your engine to its "peak performance" for the fuel you intend to use in it now. Its an old mechnics trick. Tom Skinner
  5. It was a failed Flange Gasket! I took the Carb off, then apart with my manuel there was sediment in the float chamber but needle was free. I cleaned a good little bit of sediment out then I looked straight down the carb throat and whats to my surprise the Botton Flange Gasket #43 in the book had shrunk on the two sides there are no screws on all the way to the middle of the throat/chamber partialy blocking the choke butterfly. The screws were not tight when I took them out, I wonder if the cold snap we had last week did this when I parked it hot after a 30 mile drive. Well any way a Carb Kit is on its way. Then the oil change before I start it. That is good advice Don, This could have been "Curtains" for my old Chrysler if I didn't have the good sense to catch it right away. Thanks for the replies it helps when you know people care! Tom
  6. Hello Forum, I tried to take my Chrysler for a ride today, when I went to start it, it started ran rough smoked and smelled like gas. I tried again. Same thing. I finally put the hood up and it had just flooded gas all over the carb base from halfway up the carb down, top of the intake manifold, etc.. What do I do take the carb off and get a kit and rebuild it? It smelled and sounded like gas had pissed into the crank case to on the oil stick. Its a C-38 single throat Carter Carb, the Trans is Fluid Drive, any ideas as to how to proceed? It looks like my options are to try it myself or send it out to be rebuilt. Tom
  7. Greg G, Where does one connect a condenser to th generator? Tom
  8. Alexander, If you mean a Heater Shut Off Valve for the Top of your Flat Head (Back of Block Carb Side) Yes Andy Bernbaum does phone # 1 (617) 244-1118 About $7 S&H is $7 also. Buy his Catalog its only $4 you will not need to look any further than that catalog in the future. Tom
  9. Dear Garbagestate44, I'm from the garbagestate too. Its all that and a bag of chips as Johny Bravo would say. Well I'm glad you got the Head off without breaking any Bolts TS
  10. Dear Rockwood/Norm, and Alll Good Drivers of Old Mopars, You guys outa try driving in the Carolinas, the people here stay attached to a cell phone and your rear bumper while riding your rear bumper maybe 2' back, this while your doing the limit, say 45m.p.h. on a rural road. My 250.6 cu. in. can do 60m.p.h., and often I will travel 50 in a 45, makes no difference the Carolina Drivers are 2' behind. I find women are the worse for it, however, my buddy got a Blackberry and took me for a ride in his new convertible the whole while receiving and sending e-mails. I told him to put the damn thing down or let me out of the car, he finally put it down. Im afraid its only going to get worse with Blackberry Fever out there. I only drive my 1948 Chrysler between 6AM-1PM Saturdays and Sundays, in an effort to elude Rude, Incompetent, Drivers to which there seems to be no end of out there on the country roads, Interstates are out of the question there they go 75-85 and could kill somebody and never notice. Tom PS. Virginia just enacted a New Speeding Law, going over 15m.p.h. over the Limit can bring a $1,000 fine, we need to see that in the Carolinas as well.
  11. Dear Wood Scavenger, Andy Bernbaums sells what you need (Water Pump By-Pass Elbow & Water Pump By-Pass Elbow Tube, $39.50, and $15.00 respectively). Phone 1-617-244-1118 will get you a Parts Catalog for Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto, and Chrysler Passenger Cars from 1930-1962 price for catalog $4, or just ask for these parts, and a gasket for the same, or make a gasket. Tom Skinner
  12. Dear Dave, PatS, and all Modifiers, My apology to you and all Mopar Modifiers for name calling, I wasn't thinking when I started on about describing how I feel about bringing Chrysler Products back to original. I will refrain from name calling in the future. Once again I am sorry for my insensitive wording towards other Mopar Mechanics. Tom Skinner
  13. Good information Dave, however, what about keeping 'em stock? That is to say now you have changed all these things, Oil Filter Housing, Breather Tube, Airfilter, and why can't you see that you have damaged the original Motor of the car? To me the same go's for an Electronic Ignition/Distributor. To a purist it is perposterous, to think that I, or anybody else would buy a car that had been butchered in such a way. Tom Skinner PS. If you have to re-engineer things to make yourself happy, find another brand of cars (Read Not Mopar) to Jimmy up to suite yourself. My Grandfather used to say some people are so smart, their stupid. I have to agree he was right.
  14. Dear Greg G, The number on the side of the block is 89221 with no prefix so the I theory doesn't hold, however Thank You for trying. I will ask John (my Windsor buddy) to look for a riveted tag near the generator/distributor. Any other Ideas with that number? Thanks! Tom PS Greg/Don Thanks for instructions for my pics, I will post some tommorow.
  15. Dear Shel Bizzy 48, There is no prefix on this motor what does that mean? Tom
  16. I'm trying to find motor numbers for a 1947 Windsor. My Buddy just bought one, and it is a 6 Cylinder without Spitfire on it. In addition to that there is no prefix C38W before the number on the side of the Block. I would give the number here but didn't ask him if it would be OK yet. Any Ideas as to how I could research this further? Tom
  17. Go To www.oldmopar.com there they instuct you as how to wood grain your Dash Board and other Interior Trims. It is a Painting Process, NOT AN ART that doesnt take any real artistic skill. I have done it and I can't even draw a straight line. (There are no straight lines in wood graining metal) Good Luck Tom
  18. Go to a real Lumber Yard, Lowes is for weekend warrieors, or whatever!
  19. 5/4 Board still measures an inch, and buy it wide as you like and rip it Dude! Tom
  20. Don, If your wife would buy some new underware you could have her old, and feel like fixing her car, and your sense of selfworth would return. (some make-up to) Instead once again women are just making selfish demands and not sharing or giving, but instead commanding and taking. When will they learn that we men are sensitive creatures to? Tom
  21. Maybe Chip Foots, Or God knows maybe Walter Chrysler's Carl Breer.
  22. Maybe try putting the beer back down on the bench and look at what your doing. Kids are great even though they distract you. Enjoy them they grow up fast. Tom
  23. Lose some weight, those McDonald hamburgers are to damn fattening. Just kidding! Tom
  24. Dear Ian, What are you saying you did? Are you drinking to much beer or on drugs? Replace the seal rubber, man, with new sealant black or clear for a real repair. Tom
  25. Chet, Great garage man I noticed new wood with studs 12" on center. Thats sure to protect a beautiful restoration you are closing in on. Congradulations on the tough work done. Wishing you an enjoyable finish. Tom Skinner (1948 Chrysler Royal) PS. The picture of my Chrysler exceeds the 97mb format limitation here.
