  1. Drove the car for the first time today with the new driveshaft. What a pleasure. That failing trunnion had really made it noisy to drive. The new driveshaft and the relaxed RPMs with my now operational overdrive really adds to the pleasure of driving the car. I have to go to Richmond tomorrow (about 100 miles). Had hoped to drive the woodie but the forecast is for thunderstorms so probably take the modern car. Jim Yergin
  2. Just to update this post, George Asche supplied me with a 20 tooth speedometer gear drive. My speedometer is now much more accurate. Jim Yergin
  3. Tom, That sure looks a lot better than what I sent you. Glad you could use it. Better on your car than on my garage wall. Jim Yergin
  4. Just picked up my new driveshaft with U-Joints. One of the trunnions on my original one went bad so I decided to make the change. I took Pete Anderson's parts list (thanks Pete) to a local shop and they made this for me: It cost $375. I checked with Joe McGinnis first and he has had to raise his price to $425 plus shipping so I saved some money having it done locally. If nothing else I have three more grease fittings on my car. Now it is time to get back on the road. Jim Yergin
  5. Joe, Given what you have gone throught with that engine, I am very glad to hear that the "minor engine noise" appears to be truly "minor". Jim Yergin
  6. Looks like fun. Thanks for posting the pictures. Jim Yergin
  7. Congratulations! Jim Yergin
  8. Very nice. Jim Yergin
  9. Joe, Fred's car is a 1940 so he has a coil that mounts through the firewall with a terminal on the "bottom" of the coil, inside the car. I am pretty sure AutoZone does not carry them. Fred, I have only seen them on eBay. Had a couple but they each went bad so ended up converting my 1941 Plymouth to use the more readily available "regular" (and less expensive) six volt coil. Just ran the inside coil wire out into the engine bay. Still mount the coil in the hole in the firewall. Jim Yergin
  10. Greg, I had to perform that "pedal to the floor" procedure to get my car to start last Saturday. Not as easy as it sounds with a floor mounted mechanical starter and only one right foot. Would pulling the hand throttle all the way out have the same effect? Jim Yergin
  11. Joe, In the legal world, if you end up pulling it out, that would be the definition of "a reasonable doubt." Jim Yergin
  12. It is a bank with multiple drive-throughs. Jim Yergin
  13. How true. Jim Yergin
  14. Tom, It is shifting fine. Thought I might have a problem with a bearing in the transmission but it turns out I have bad trunnion joint on the driveshaft. Looks like it is time for the next "upgrade". Replace the trunnions with regular u-joints. That will be added to the upgrades of four wheel disc brakes, dual reservoir master cylinder, 230 engine, overdrive transmission, radial tires, and relocated front shocks. Just look at what this forum gets you to do. Jim Yergin
  15. Wait a minute. Let me get this straight. There are people who actually do it right the first time? I'll be darned. That certainly isn't me. I consider myself lucky if I get it right the second time. Jim Yergin
  16. Here are a few more pictures.
  17. What better way to spend the afternoon of one of the hotest day's of the year then at a local fund raising car show on a paved parking lot void of any shade. Had a good time any way. About 30 cars. Not many truly "old" cars. Mine was the only Mopar product. Local Corvette club dominated. The winner of the show was a 1955 Chevrolet. It is a sign of the times when you are surprised to find the original 6 cylinder engine in the very nice Chevrolet pick-up. Jim Yergin
  18. Doug, Just let me know when you are coming. I am about 35 miles southwest of D.C Jim Yergin
  19. Doug, Where in Virginia? Jim Yergin
  20. Rick, What oil are you using? Jim Yergin
  21. Congratulations. The car looks great and the award is well deserved. Jim Yergin
  22. Looking good Chet. You are in the really fun phase - reassembly and having it look better with each thing you do. I am looking forward to you driving it out here to Warrenton and seeing it in person. Jim Yergin
  23. Glad to hear Rodney is alive and well. I don't think he has been on the forum lately. Did he mention why he wasn't at Sully? Jim Yergin
  24. On my overdrive, I am using a Shift-Rite gearshift knob switch with a locking 6 volt VW headlight relay to operate my overdrive. Because the Shift-Rite switch is a momentary switch I had no visible way to tell whether the relay was on or off. I therefore installed a light that is wired to the power terminal on the overdrive solenoid. It lights up when the relay is in the “on” position and the solenoid is energized. Since I no longer use the original relay or the ignition interrupter function of the kick-down switch to operate the overdrive, I decided to use the original relay to control a second indicator light. The ground terminal of the relay is wired to the ignition grounding terminal of the overdrive solenoid. When the solenoid plunger engages and places the car in overdrive, the relay is grounded and the second light comes on. None of this is necessary but I enjoy the light show. I am just posting this information in case it may be of some use to others. Jim Yergin
  25. Impressive. Thanks for posting the pictures. Jim Yergin
