  1. Dad taught me to take a bolt the size of the of the ones you will be using. Take a triangle file or nowadays a dremel, cut a line perpendicular to the threads along the length of the bolt. Then spray in some penetrating oil and work the bolt in like you would a tap. Two turns in one turn out till it bottoms out. Then spray in some more penetrant, and back it out. The groove in the threads gives the crud someplace to accumulate, and you can clean the hole and thread lans without cutting any metal.
  2. The linked site requires registration to view photos. care to share your log in and pass word??????
  3. Bob, have you had any luck chasing the mileage gremlin. I know you had some problems with cam timing gear and chain etc. at on point. Is that corrected?
  4. I believe I read on a chart somewhere that the engine and tranny W/O fluid drive was 785 don't know if this included fluids and accesories? fluid drive adds 80 to 85 lbs. Seems the V8 combo is about 100 to 125 lbs lighter. Yer gonna need to heat some springs to get the nose down.........

    "Spitfire"?

other than saying spitfire with a few neat lightning bolts cast on the head, nothing..... It is probably a transplanted chrysler 251 or 265 sitting in a truck. the Spitfire thing was a marketing mark Chrylser used on their engines, both the flat 6 and a few early non hemi V8's. Does sound darn sexy though don't it??????

    Car quiz OT

Yea can't read my own writing 30 is a Tbird, 38 was the one I believe it is a Ford LTD but it says no.
  7. Make sure the ground wire is in good shape, clean and tight. Also check the plug for corrosion. Either of these will cause more resistance through the circuit and might tend to shorten bulb life.

    Car quiz OT

well in 10 minutes at lunch I got 86/100. missing the model on 3, can't begin to get 8, number 9 is a nash but it won't accept it., 10 is an AMC put in Javelin, and AMX hornet, and gremlin13 and 24 are drawing blanks, as is 30, and I can't get the model for 42. But for a lunchtime quickie thought that was pretty good.
  9. VW & Audi's and several other odern cars that still use bolts instead of studs and nuts include a plastic guide pin that screws into a hole to hold align the wheel while you put in the other 4 bolts. A bolt with the head cut off would work on the one side but you would need to fine left hand threads for the other side.
  10. charlie hope you get the info you need. Happy New Year!!! I sent you an OT personal message with some FLA DMV questions. Hope you might be able to answer some of them.
  11. John, can you set up a bench test or the motor without the linkage arms??? If so try the motor with the polarity reversed and see if the direction of rotation changes. If like it has been suggested that the motor is polarity dumb, then all you would have to do is to wire it up with a voltage reducer, regardless of ground.

    New Guy

If you are concerned about high engine revs at highway speeds you may want to consider swapping the rear end to one with a lower numeriv gear ratio. I believe for your car the rear end out of 70's "A" body cars from chrysler are a pretty easy swap and will give you a ratio of 3.23 or 3.55 to 1 wwhich will accomplish much the same thing as having the OD. OD's can be had from a very reliable source who is a friend of may on this site. He rebuilds them and supplies all the electrical stuff needed to install for about 1200 to 1500 bucks. It is a bolt in basically. The rear ends can be had for a lot less in bone yards, and are more difficult to install plus you need to have a new drive shaft made, but all in all might be more economical than the OD thing. Either option will give you a more relaxed engine at highway speed.

    turning signals

You can source universal kits fom JC Whitney, NAPA, or on the web from places like the taillightking. They sell for about 20 buck or so. Most cas I see through the mid 50's usually have these rather than factory installed as signal lights were an option till the mid 50 or so. You will need to change the contacts in the bulb holder to a 2 wire set up, you can buy these in a bubble pack from most autoparts stores. You simply swap out the single contact fibre washer in the botom of the socket for the double one and then rewire the parking light circuit then hook up the signal wiring tot he new wires for the other bulb element. You will ned to find non staggered pin dual filamant bulbs for the application also. The taillightking website has wiring diagrams you can print off also.
  14. I am running white light in my coupe. NY allowed white signals till about 62 or 63, when most manufactureres switched over to amber. So should be that any vehicle manufactured prior to that would be allowed to use white or clear lenses, as that is how they were made, and complied to the laws at the time of production. I do not think that the laws can make you upgrade if your car or truck came from the factory with clear/white. I do remember that there was aftermarket stuff available mostly for Chevies and Fords so you could make your 55 Chebbie look like a 64 light wise.
  15. So this morning my daughter gets up to go to work, goes outside and her rental car (her's is in the shop after an accident) is gone, not only her's but her roomate's ( a car she bought about a week and a half ago) and her other roomate's father's car (out of state plates) is gone also. They live in one of those gated Florida communities in a Duplex Condo belonging to one roomates boyfriend's sister (Don't get me going on this)with a community association and all their bogus rules and regulations. Upon investigation it is discovered that the Assoiciation Asthetic Code Enforcment officer had them towed as they were strange vehicles. No warning, no questions, just show up at 3 AM and tow them. Well the one roomates father was nice enough to pay the impound fees, but then raised holy hannah with the tow company and the trash can ranger. He asked upon whom's authority three vehicles were towed from the same address without so much as a pardon me but are these your cars???? Was told the trash can ranger decided to have them removed. So his car had out of state plates, really suspicious seeing it is HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIME you bovine dolt, and under the same circumstances I can certainly understand why a rental car might get the hook, probably no one in Florida visits for the HOLIDAYS, Flies in and rents a CAR while they are visiting, and OH YEA!!! Since the new car wasn't a BMW or Jaguar, it was suspicious also. The Dad, being a lawyer and all, is having a demand restitution letter drawn up with a demand for the reimbursement check to be in his hands by end of business Tuesday, or will be following up with enough legal paper to cover the walls in the association's offices. Yes there is a rule about notifying the association of visitors and other cars there temporarily, but since the office closed for the HOLIDAYS on Dec 22, and won't reopen till January 4th, there was no way to tender the notice. See what happens when you give a moron a bit of authority......... Arrggghhhh Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night!!!!!!!
  16. There are a few folks running flatties with aftermarket AC. It can be done. Use of a small import car type compressors make it pretty easy on the HP drain.
  17. Randy. Bit too much holiday nog????? I might think the motor WW motor would confuse its parking place withthe wires reversed but that is only a guess.
  18. The basic Dodge system is as you described. Chrysler complicated the issue by refering to other systems including the semi automatic as fluid drive also. and then in 49 or so Dodge also offered the Semi auto matic as Gyromatic and continued to refer to is as a Fluid drive system. But the Basic Dodge and Desoto Fluid drive systems had a fluid coupling (not a torque converter) transferring rotations from the engine to the flywheel to which a standard three speed with clutch was attached. Once a gear was selected it could be driven without utilizing the clutch, by driving around in the selected gear using only the gas pedal and brake. Or again to confuse things, you could drive it like a regular three speed car also.
  19. Oh that old thing, the 5X6 flathead tank engine from Chrysler. All ya gotta do is count the distributors or sumptin like that.....
  20. Well if push comes to shove, and you can not find the factory spec, you can always revert to the spec for the fastener. I bleieve there is a max torque rating for every bolt and nut combo ever made. Here is a calculator you can plug your fastener information into and get a value for different applications, http://www.efunda.com/designstandards/screws/calc_bolt_torque.cfm#Answer
  21. Yea, nothing like the smell of hot vinegar wafting in from the garage. Every now and again my wife runs a batch of vinegar through the coffee maker to cleanit out. Love that smell.
  22. go to carnut.com and click on car specs, the basic timing spark plug settings points gap etc are there at least for the car engines.
  23. There have been a couple of posts regarding setting up and electrolytic bath for immersing rusty stuff in and connecting up an annode and cathode deal with a battery charger. Most of the info I have seen says to use water and sodium carbonate or bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) that obviously works well. I have also heard of people soaking stuff in vinegar (acetic acid) without the electrical stimulation, and it works well albiet somewhat more liesurly. I have a tow hitch reciever I liberated which is quite rusty. I am wondering if there is a potential problem using the electrolytic process with the vinegar as the media rather than the water and soda solution. Before I trot off to the garage and dunk some steel into the vinegar and hook up the battery charger, does anyone think there will be a problem??? Also here is another a question 6 V or 12 V?????
  24. Ed don't forget the Migs, Sturmovik and other russian planes. And the Italians had some interesting stuff also. Check this site for a couple diffeent shots of the P 38 http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.richard-seaman.com/Wallpaper/Aircraft/Fighters/Yak3TakingOff.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.richard-seaman.com/Wallpaper/Aircraft/Fighters/&h=768&w=1024&sz=224&hl=en&start=44&tbnid=bVRJ8LzCB42c6M:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dyak%2Baircraft%26start%3D36%26ndsp%3D18%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
  25. Don't forget there were Marine varients also and some of those were cam'ed to counter rotate, so that two engines mated to a center gear turned one prop shaft.
