  1. " So the cap just sits there loosely ? " Well , I would snug it up a little so that it doesn't fall off . Take a look at your overflow tube , on a non-pressurized system it should be vented to the atmosphere at all times . I really like my non-pressurized system , it runs at 160 all of the time , once warmed up .
  2. Did you soak the leather accelerater pump in oil before installation ? It is ether that or there isn't enough gas getting to the bowl . The orfice could be plugged too , the one that feeds the accelerator pump , it is very small .
  3. There is a guy in Stockton Ca . who has recently purchased a 1940 Dodge heavy duty pickup , 1 1/2 ton . It needs reconditioning before it hits the road though . I gave him the address to this site and hopefully he will join in . 48 dodger ; do you have the name and address of that wrecking yard in the bay area that has some of these old trucks ? He is looking for a few parts .
  4. Mine is not really to store , more to carry small items so they don't roll around in the bed of my truck . It is a very old milk case . I cut the wires out of it that separated the milk bottles and fastened it to the floor . Made from hardwood and steel . One day , before I had put in the box , my wife asked me to stop at the grocery store and buy some melons . I had melons rolling around in the cab on the way home .
  5. That would be a common hardware store pipe plug .
  6. You can't really see the horse hair very well . After 60 or 70 years a guy could wonder how well it is holding up and if there is any dirt build up around the edges that hasn't been washed clean .
  7. There is another reason to change from oil bath to a paper filter . The air first goes through the top portion of the housing which has a horse hair element , there is no way to see how dirty this horse hair has become over the years without cutting the steel apart .
  8. Yes , clockwise is correct .
  9. Well , if you get them wrong , you won't hurt anything . Then you can just reverse them . I usually test them using an old headlight and a battery and watch for the needle movement .
  10. See is the filter element will spin a little bit . It fits snug on the center . If it will spin , it should pull out .
  11. I sold a Ford that way here in Stockton Ca . For my sale , the car had to FAIL the smog test .
  12. I am sure that Ed meant to say ... any 39-47 cab ...
  13. Here is a site for the 1952 Auto Lite catalog . It might have been posted here before . It covers years 1938 - 1952 www.russellsnewoldparts.com/uploads/1/5/6/2/15626480/1952_autolite_catalog.pdf
  14. Unity is the name of a company that made ( make ?) spotlights . Try doing a goggle search for them .
  15. As mentioned , your leather on your accelerator pump could have dried out . Especially after sitting for several months . But also the very small passage that the pump squirts gasoline into the throat of your carborator could be plugged with just a little debris . I know your carb was rebuilt ... but it doesn't take much to plug it up . Look down the throat of your carb and give the throttle a twist , you should see a healthy squirt of gas enter the carb . If it is plugged , sometimes you can unplug it easily with a thin wire , if not , there is an aluminum plug that you can remove for access .
  16. So your cable size is good . As mentioned, make sure all of the cable ends are clean and bright . Also a cable can be mostly rotted away inside where you can't see it , from the battery acid . It will swell up some with corrosion but the wire strands will be gone .
  17. Yes , use a screwdriver to get the screw started and then pull the first tool away .
  18. This little tool comes in handy .
  19. For some reason , it doesn't work that way . Jack up one wheel only . I learned this the hard way .
  20. Thanks Doug , If they sell , I won't be making much $ on them though , as my cost was high too . I have two pair of these beauties with boxes and another pair without the boxes and I haven't figured out yet if the third pair is NOS or not .
  21. NOS 1948 - 1950 Dodge truck parking lights . I have them for sale on ebay , number 231405915560
  22. If Jay Leno could only see your wonderful collection of old mechanical stuff , I am sure he would become a ' best bud ' and offer the use of his magical part duplication machine .
  23. As a last resort , can a machine shop build up your old part for re-use ? Perhaps too many $$ . I have seen advertisements for shops that rebuild the steering gears , I wonder what they would do in this case ? Here is a name and address that I have saved : Ace Steering ( ace Automotive ) , 801 W. Forsyth St. , Jacksonville , Fl. , 32204 . 904-353-7111 Disclaimer - I have not done business with this company .
  24. I also had problems with Champion plugs , I took them out and threw them away . It seemed like they were leaking the compression out , perhaps between the steel and the porcelain .
  25. I guess here ; A military engine ? M37 might be a model of a military vehicle . EDIT ; Dodge made a M37 3/4 ton vehicle with 4 wheel drive starting around 1950 or 1951 . Perhaps one of the military truck sites can identify that serial number .
