  1. wdoland knows the correct answer so I also assume your were a camper. I camped with my family since I was a young kid. started off tent camping and touring the USA. Then went to an Apacie Tent camper and upgraded to a Starcraft. HAd alot of fun and good memories was a member of the Natioanl Campers and Hickers Assoc. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  2. The location is important. The electirc pumps are ment to be a pusher style pump and not a puller style. So they need to be located as close as possible to the fule tank to push the fuel upto the carb. ALso usea kill switch for these when not inuse. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  3. Modern CV joint rubber boot that can be adapted to fit the Pin and trunion driveshaft. I found that a napa 686-1073 CV rubber boot kit has the small opening to be about the proper size. The large end will require to have the first ring cut back inoder for the rubber to go around the small end of the housing . This will also reguire the pin to be removed to get the boot on first. Use either a plastic strap to get the rubber tight against the housing. These CV rubber are fresh stock Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. I think he has a combination of the Pin and Trunion on the front and the cross style on the rear I know the 46 had this type of setup. So he would need to still pull the rear and then do the fron because of the four bolts that hold the housing in place. Rich Hartung
  5. Since the early Chrysler and Desoto used the lug bolts there isa peg on the drums to hold the rim on the drum so you can center the rim and then start to thread one of the bolts. You would need to drill a hole so tha the pin could come throught the flange. The Ply/Dodge used the lug nut style so the extra hole is not needed. A good machine shop can dril out the hole in the correct spot on the flange. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. Missed seeing this go across the table. But did notice that on several cars the seller did not get his price. The was a dodge that cost the owner 74K it was a newer car not an real old car. There was a limited production run. I can not remember what the car acutally was but he only got a bid of 38-40K. The car was a 2010 Dodge Challanger r/t made by Steve Saleen with a 500HP engine 1 of 2 . with 3k miles on the car. The MSRP was 73K sold for 45100.00 So they took a big cut on this car. Surprised that when you have car wqith this high of a MSRP that you do not at least have a reserve on the car or the MSRP was so overly priced. HAve to also figure the cost to get the car there and they entrance fee to lose money??????? So the buyer got the best part of this sale. So it always doesnot mean if you have a limited car at 100 point that you are going to get your price, being an absolute action he had to sell the car. On Mecumm there was Ford Retractable that have the supercharger ending on 20 cars made the guy only got 125 and the ownere was expecting to get double that and more. Money is still tight and if you have some to spend on a car I stil lthink you can get some good buys on cars that have been restored and the seller is paying allthe cost and you reap the benefits. A 50 Desoto for 60K should have been a perfect+ car for that money. Just went online to BJ: This was a 4 door Sedan, HAd coker radial Wide White wall tires. Seats were recovered. Noticed in the engine they had the wrong battery, should have been a tar top not a modern battery also hoseclamps were modern aligator type. So they bir this car up for charity but then it gives a false sence to any 50 Desoto owner as to what they think their car is worth. Too much money for this car but yes for charity so I understand. 7. I have to agree with some of the other statements. If you have the time, Tools, room, help and experience to restore the car and MONEY to buy the parts then go for the gusto. But if you have to go out an puchase all of the items to get the car back on the road then pass on it. You can find cars that have been restored and the owner wants to get rid of the car and get them at a good price. Just look at the olders cars on Barret JAckson completely all done and they are show cars and can be driven away and the ownere takes a bath on what they get offered for the car. Just my two cents. 8. MOOG compnay makes Universal Sway Bar Bushings: Here is a link to their webpage that tells you how yo measure the metal sway bar and how to find the correct modern replacement. http://www.moog-suspension-parts.com/Universal-Sway-Bar-Bushings.asp Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. Barry: The lines would all be double flare when connecting to a junction block or connector. If using a brass adapter at the Wheel cylinder then the end from the brakeline would also be double flared and the brass adapter are you stating is a straight thread. Just trying to make sure everyone understands what you are saying with straight and double flare lines. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  10. . Some times the Dodge and FArgo trucks share the same parts and will also check that. I will look in my WAGNER BRAKE CATALOG TO SEE IF I CAN GET A WAGNER NUMBER Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  11. Very Nice worksmanship onthis. I would be afraid to drive it because of the very low stance and this looks to be taken some where over in Europe and with the cobblestone highways and old roads you might hit bottom. If trying to get into a campground that just has non paved roads you might get stuck and also hit bottom. Would love to see more pictures of the engine and also the inside of the unit. Looks to be an old school bus that was cut down. Rich HArtung
  12. Because that what it says on my manual and service manual for my 39 Desoto. I have been doing this for the past 20 years and have no issue with the timing and the running of the car. It might be different for other years but plu wire 6 works for me. I will try to find the section in the service manual and post it. I can get my car to be smooth on 2 degrees before TDC. ALso on the Number six cylinder on the head there is a small bolt that you can remove also to do timing with the old miller timing light so that is also why I use number 6. Rich HArtung
  13. same here, also have a Sears Craftsman 12 volt timeing light. The light might be a little duller but this works on my 39 desoto and I just connect the wires or leads for the correct positive ground to get it to work. Basically opposite the setup as a 12v. So now the positive lead now go to the ground and the negative to the side that is getting the juice or electical. I put the spark plug connecter on my number 6 plug wire. 14. I have had a rebuild engine that was done in 1985. After having it rebuilt I have been using 10w40 oil in the car and have had the car for almost 30 years. The 10 is the cold blend and the 40 is the hot blend. Rich Hartung
  15. The official thickness here is PA for our state Inspection at the min is 3/32 left on the lining. So if you are that close then they replace the shoes. This is also on the modern cars for disc and drum style bakes shoes. Like I said get the lining brake shoe gage at your local auto supply and when you take off your drum then measure the thickness. The starting thickness for the riveted lining is 3/16 thickness this is pretty much standard. Not all cars and trucks use the same lining numbers. I can look up lining numbers for you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  16. You can also get the brake lining gage tool at any good auto supply store. This is the tool that the mechanics use to measure the lining thickness. Be careful there are two different tools one for dick bake lining measurement and one for regular style drum style brake thickness. You can pick these up in the swap meets also. Do a search on ebay to see what type you need. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  17. Basically it was done by the way that I had describer from above. Some are also thinking that the metal was all flat then grained then shaped but then you would get sctaches and bend marks, so not sure if that is correct. The guy from Grain-it has the process down to a very simple process. He is the company that has trained most of the pro's that you see advertised in Hemmings and on the Internet, so you know that the quality is going to be good for a show car. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. Brian: MAke sure the rear passenger fitting is sitting inthe back of the wheel cylinder correctly. Remember this isa flared fitting and if it is not perfectly squared then you will get leakage. You might not have the screw tighten down enough. Always use a flarenut wrench to make sure you do not bugger up the nut and this provides equal contact on the nut. So the inner wheel cylinder is not leaking just at the line correct? Also you had stated that you could not get a front brake block. These are hard to find. You would only need one of these if the threads got stripped. BAsically this is a box with f threaded and flared holes and a braket to bolt it to the frame. The top hole is for the brake swith, the two rear holes is for the line to the MC and then theother hole is to the rear brake line. The two front go to each franot wheel. Keep me upto date on how you make out with the rear line. You are getting closer. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  19. you might want to contact Rhode Island wiring. They already have several wire harnesses that they have remade over the years. I have used them and they are a qulaity shop and also have a number on each wire and a document that tells where is wire needs to connect to. Or you could make your own wire harness and copy the wires that are already on the truck. The old style cloth covered wire really is new wire that has the plastic coating and the cloth cover is pulled over the wire. The old original wire was just cloth covered with no inner protection so the newer stuff is much better. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  20. I do know tha the convertable did not have wood graining but the dash and garnish modling were generally the same color as the body. I had a 39 Dodge which was a step down from my 39 Desoto and that also had wood graining. It would have been easier for CHrylser just to piant the modleing the color of the car or just a brown. If I remebr correctly I think the lower cost Plymouth the roadking did not have wood grainf but was palin brown. Not sure someone might beable to comment on this. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  21. I would not file the splines, if anyhting then just use some emery paper to clean it up to get rid of any rust. If you took off material then the clutch plate gets movement and do not want that. Let TN Clutch check out the pieces. I also have the Miller tool to remove and install the pilot bushing. recommend that this be done when putting inthe new Clutch and PP assembly The bushing tool also burnishes the bushing so that it is the correct inside diameter. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. The grain it method is very basic. They have a kit that a homeownere can purchase. They have various metal plates in different sizes that have the appropriate wood grain etched into them. You then pullthe graining color which is an ink across the plate with a squeegee. Then then have these rubber rollers which look like the old gum paper eraseros that we had in grade school. You then take the roll and start at one end on the plate and roll the grain pattern onto the roller. Then you roll the pattern onto the section on the garnish modling. You can only do a section at atime and the amount of grain that is put down depends on the size of the roller. Then you repeat the process again and then do another section. After the grain has dried then I spray it with a clear coat to set the grain so it does not get ruined. Then take a wood stain to your liking to darkedn the background coloring. I forgot 1 point prior to putting down the grain you need to pyt a base coat color. I use a light tan color. Grain-it can also provide the base color and the grainign color as part of the kit. After the darker wood sating has dried you can seal it with a clear coat from a spray can. If you want it to darker then apply another coat of the stain. If you do not like how dark it is then just wipe it off and you are back to the last coloring that you had sealed. We have found that most people spray the last clear coat with a highl gloss clear but what the originalgloss was more of a satin but you do the last clear to your liking. You will need to experiment a couple of times. I learned to do this when they came to the AACA annula meeting in Phila and they did a demo of the process and he asked if anyone you like to try it. I mastered it in a single try and he asked if i had every done this before and I siad no. Several years ago I showed a major auto restoration shop what I had done and they asked me if i could do the panels for a 36 Essex but I stated that I was not upto the level of their restoration facilty so you can get good results and also get the pleasure of saying you did it your self. Just to let you know that the PRO's get about 200-300 for a door window moulding and about 1000-2000 for a dash. Write to me if you need more info. I might have some pictures at home of some examples. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com cell 484-431-8157 home 610-630-9188
  23. You can buy a kit from the grain-It company and redo you widow trim in the correct grained effect. I have the kit and have done a couple of garnish molding on my 39 Desoto. It is simple but just takes some time and practice. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  24. There isa spring repair center in Eddystone, PA which is near I-95 and 476 Near Chester PA. for the guys in the greater Philadelphia/Souther NJ and Wilmington Delware area. 25. I would just replace the engine mounts if they are original as the first thing to see if this smooths out the running. MAybe the DS has gone out of balance or when you took the shaft off you should have marked on both end a line on the DS and the pinion and also on the trans end so you you had put them back in the same spot. I would suggest that you rotate the mouting flanges a 1/4 turn clockkwise on both ends and then drive it to see if this might smooth out the ride. keep doing this until you get what you want. This might be the cause of the problem. Also does your playmouth have a vibration dampener on the engine. This also will help smooth out the engine. I know my 39 Desoto has one but not sure on the Plymouth. These are just some thoughts. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
