  1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you all for the encouragement. Finances will improve, I may even take the opportunity to go back to school myself. Which makes it even more likely that I will sell some toys. I got some notices that I missed some Private Messages because my Mailbox was full. I cleaned out the box, so please resend your messages if you didn't get a reply.

  3. Ed, here's a picture of the DeSoto. I bought it in NY and drove it back 650 miles to Cincinnati.
  4. Several forum members have emailed me after receiving invitations to join LinkedIn, which is a social networking site for business professionals. A collegue invited me to join, and I guess I was careless enough to let the site send invites to those of you who are in my list of contacts. Please just decline the invitation if you are not interested. The site is harmless enough, even useful to some business professionals, but I know many of you want to reduce you internet footprint as much as possible. Anyway, my apologies... On another note, I just returned from my niece's wedding in Texas to find that I have been laid off for the second time in eight years. I'm keeping the running Pilothouse, but I also have two project vehicles that may have to go: a 48 Club Coupe a 52 DeSoto wagon Also available: a George Asche-built 265ci flathead (0 miles) w/dual carbs and headers a George Asche-built overdrive (0 miles) A dyno-tested rebuilt 318 (0 miles) Brand-new Mopar Performance A-518 transmission Lots of misc stuff, from chrome spoke wheels, re-plated bumpers, etc that may end up on eBay. I know it's a bad time to sell, but with two kids in college, I would consider selling some of my projects (or parts) if anyone is interested.

  6. Be careful out there, Bob. I came through a nasty tornado when I was younger (15 of my neighbors weren't so lucky), but I broke some bones in the aftermath. It's still dangerous during the cleanup! Glad to hear that you are all unhurt.
  7. I have some extras. Send me a PM with your address.
  8. GT, can't thank you enough for providing this forum. Thanks again for all your hard work!
  9. What about moving the front window track? Did you get a track from a non-vented door, or did you fabricate the front window track from scratch?
  10. I'll take them, Charlie. I sent you a PM with my contact info.
  11. Here's an article on a P-15 headliner install
  12. do an eBay search for auction # 380270404823
  13. I haven't gotten as far as adjusting endplay. Just checking that all parts fit and work properly with the new differential. I don't see how this can be a shim issue. If displacing an axle shaft by a few hundreds of an inch would lock up a wheel.... well, more of you guys would no longer be alive to post comments here. Bob, the axle isn't binding, it's locked. It will rotate a few degrees back and forth. So you are probably right that there is an internal problem with the differential. Come to think of it, I have been missing a 1/2" socket.... Brad, how expensive was your diff rebuild? I don't have the tools to do it myself, and since I want to live to post again, it may be time for professional help. Don, I enjoy talking to George, I really do. But most days it's hard to find that much time. Thought I'd give the forum a shot.
  14. I just replaced my 4.11 differential with a 3.73 that I got from George Asche a few years ago. I swapped the pinion flanges, replacing the pinion seal as well. Replaced axle bearings and races, replaced inner and outer oil seals. I put it all back together yesterday to see how the old axles fit into the new differential. Everything seems to fit together great, but the passenger side axle will not turn. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Or perhaps this is a differential problem?
  15. I tried every decent parts store in Cincinnati with the bearing retainer in hand. The best seal anyone could find was National 1216N. It was perfect on the ID, but a little loose on the OD. I almost tried to glue it with sleeve retainer, but finally found a better seal on eBay. It is a perfect fit, virtually identical in appearance to the original seal. The bad news is: It came in a plain white box, with no part number on the seal. The good news: He still has them for sale. The seller's username is jobrated. His eBay store is named All Kinds of Surplus.
  16. Truth to tell, it wasn't really a gift to Reg. I couldn't really afford to contribute to the forum, so Reg made a generous forum contribution in exchange for the heater. Many thanks to GTK and all the contributors who keep this forum up and running!
  17. The paint looks fantastic in the photos. Isn't it a little early for wax? Usually you have to let the paint cure for awhile before waxing.
  18. I've never seen a DeSoto with the straight 8 either. But the parts book says they exist. And, yes, the spring perchs would have to be welded on top of the axle housing. Pretty basic welding job for a decent welder, probably 45 minutes or so
  19. I'm running 1.25" wheel adapters on my truck. You can buy spacers in different thicknesses for 40 or 50 dollars that would add some width.
  20. I don't understand why you would need to swap carriers. If the third member doesn't swap right in, the carriers are not going to fit either. I swapped a DeSoto third member into my B-1-C rear axle housing with no problems. I had to swap the pinion flange, but it fit fine. I sleeved the pinion flange (Speedy Sleeve was CR 99159) cuz it had the usual groove worn into it. There were two different axles and differentials for 1952 DeSotos. One for the 6 cylinder models and one for the straight 8's. Myabe you were unlucky enough to get one from the 8 cylinder model. You might be able to use the entire DeSoto rear axle assembly from the straight 8, though. It would require spring perchs on top of the DeSoto axle housing, and swapping the pinion flange. Myabe longer brake lines on the axle housing. Both the 52 truck and 52 DeSoto should have 10 spline axles, I believe. The DeSoto axle housing might be a little longer than the B2B, but the trucks have a little extra room in the rear fenders. Take a look at pictures of our trucks and you will see what I mean. That's my understanding, but I get most of my knowledge from the real mechanics on this forum...
  21. When I was a kid, my dad used to use my...uhh..cigarette papers to set the point gap...
  22. I left the freezer open last January. I am clearly the winner.
  23. Andy Bernbaum is a good, knowledgeable vendor for many old Plymouth parts. But don't buy rubber parts from him, they are sometimes a little problematic. He has a well-known reputation for bad attitude and lousy customer service, as well.
  24. Not so dumb, I only lost one. I'll try them, thanks!
  25. Well, I screwed up again. I have lost one of the keys that locks the rear hub/drum to the axle on my B-1-C. Is the key a standard size that I could get locally?
