Reg Evans Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Our air has been filled with smoke since last Sunday morning after a lightning storm rolled through Northern Calif and touched off several hundreds fires. We had to cut our camping trip short to get home indoors to escape the smoke a little. Here's a photo of my view. I can usually see the snow capped Sierras 40 miles away as the crow flies. Now I can hardly see my lower property line. Cough ! Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Reg; I was wondering if any of you left coasters were in harms way. How close are the flames? Any chance they will head your way? Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 26, 2008 Author Report Posted June 26, 2008 Don, The closest fire is about 15 or 20 miles away as the crow flies near the little town of Washington. Fortunately there hasn't been any wind to speak of so the fires aren't traveling very fast. That's why the smoke is hanging around. The smoke is very heavy in the bay area too according to my brother who lives in Benicia about 120 miles from here. Cough. Quote
TodFitch Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 The smoke has been pretty noticeable here too. Depending on the day we either get the smoke from the north (coastal range fires), the east (Sierra fires) or the south (Bug Sur fire). Fortunately the smaller fires to the west (between us and the ocean) have been dealt with. Unless more get started. Makes the lunch time run and the morning and evening bicycle commute less than pleasurable but it does mean we have very colorful sunsets. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Reg I think you better send a car hauler East with your best stock. I'll be happy to watch them for you until the fires are clear. I figure right about when winter sets in here they should be safe to head back to CA. Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 26, 2008 Author Report Posted June 26, 2008 Great idea Ed ! Please PM me with your visa # ? Quote
chucky07 Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 i live close to the sierras in a valley and it's very smokey here for the last 2 or 3 weeks......they say lightning strikes caused the fires....i guess there are quite a few..... Quote
Bob_Koch Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 We look about the same as you do here,Reg. I think all of our wines will have a little hint of a smoky flavor this year. We were going to head for the hills to go camping next week during the holiday, but we canceled that idea. Probably stay home and go to the air conditioned theater and the movies. Quote
48Dodger Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Visablity is down to 600 ft at my house. Its like fog. I read there are 842 seperate fires, and Calif, has been importing firefigthers from all over the U.S. Can't hardly breathe out here, so I'm heading the coast for the weekend. 48D:( Quote

Bob_Koch Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 There's a nice campground there called Casini Ranch http://www.casiniranch.com/maps.php They say even the ocean is smoky - but it can't be as bad as what you guys have. And it's cooler - Bring a jacket. One of my co-workers lives in Jenner, which is right on the coast. I'll see what she says about it this morning. Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 Oh Yeah...Casini....I've been there with my bro. You can kayak out to the ocean from there and as a bonus they have wireless internet ! Quote
Bob_Koch Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 The coast is clear. Come on over. Santa Rosa is a bit smokey but I don't think anywhere near what you guys have. Quote
