david lazarus Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 In Alberta, nearly 35% of the price of gas is taxes. We even have to pay tax on a tax.Remember, the current rise in gas prices has nothing to do with shortages or anything else...it's purely speculators. But government still gets their cut, and they are drunk on oil money. If we get another natural disaster or another 9-11 type disaster, prices could double. Pat is correct, there is loads of the stuff in the ground, here in NZ 47% of the totoal cost of fuel is Govt related taxes, that is after I have paid 30%+ tax at source !!! Well guys, your President/politicians want your vote, make it an election issue. Its just as big a scam as global warming and carbon tax, which the morons that run this country have swallowed....but election year here in NZ this year so may be time for a reality check for the politicans. 55 Fargo Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 North Dakota should have oil in the Badlands, or near Bismark, and Minot areas or near the Sasakatchewan/Manitoba borders. Manitoba keeps finding oil, nothing like Alberta, ND probably has oil in the ground too. Quote
Powerhouse Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Saw on the news today where in Tijuana Mexico gas is 2.19 a gallon and people in southern cal were drivin across the border to get the cheaper gas. HOW COME A LINE DRAWN IN THE SAND CAN MAKE GAS 2.00 A GALLON CHEAPER???? SOMETHING IS BADD WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIME TO HEAD SOUTH OF DEE BORDER!!!!!!! HOT DANG IT'S ONLY AN HOUR FROM HERE!!!!!!!! I think we should dig a big trench and dump all the crooked greedy politicians in it..and then poor gas on them and then....well, maybe I should calm down...hmmmm.... Quote
greg g Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Not to offend our offshore brothers but I see you gas prices and raise you the cost of our medical insurance and health care costs. I made our last car payment back in april. seems that the difference is being eaten up because we haven;t been able to see a difference at the end of the month. So now it mortgage health ins, communications, groceries and gas. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 I think oil is the new "bubble" like housing was, and the dot com boom was before that. Everybody with money to invest is dumping it into oil an gas futures looking to get rich quick. Right now we have shakey stock market a housing and credit bust and a weak economy. So where do I put my money sure to make a buck quick.....OIL! Everyones gotta buy it no matter how good your hybrid is. Hopefully we will have a major "correction" soon. But with the lousy presidential candidates we have to choose from, both of whom seem ready to exacerbate the situation I am not holding my breath for a retreat in prices. BTW ethanol added the SoCal summer blend tends to lower the power output in a gallon of fuel which = slightly lower mpg's. Quote
PatS.... Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 There is a Calgary company working capped wells in Tenn.(I think!) They were capped years ago because the oil was to thick to get out economically. They are injecting steam into a new hole beside the old one and producing a fair bit of heavy oil that a nearby refinery is able to process. You have thousands of these old capped wells just waiting to be reopened. It's sure economical now!!! Environmentalists are making some reopenings impossible but not all. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Back in the 70`s when we had gas problems , POPULAR MECHANICS printed plans on how to make your own moonshine still and people were making their own gas , i guess it`s time to build a new one !!! Those plans maybe floating around the NET somewhere ? I bet TIM ADAMS still has his ??? Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 If I still lived out in the rural portion of Minnesota, I'd probably build myself a still and grow enough corn to make ethanol for my Neon. Here in Colorado, however, I'll put my "reserve/investment" money in gold. By my calculations, gold and other precious metals have "increased" 36% in the last 6 months. What does that really mean? The US dollar has fallen over 36% in the last 6 months. Fuel prices, as all things, will cost more "dollars" as the real value of a US dollar continues to drop. I'll laugh heartily if the Natives in South Dakota can produce enough gasoline to make a dent in the supply and demand for gasoline. It'll serve those Arabs and the Yankees right to make our indigenous peoples rich with oil! All other things being equal, I will gladly buy gasoline from the station that sells 100% American Indian gasoline. Quote
bobby horne Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Story on the news was that alcohol could be made from about any type of plant, even weeds.........Ford and Chevy are doing real well in China now that most everything sold in this country is made there....We will be riding the little scooters the Chinese have been riding for years, and the Chinese will be riding in the Chevys and Fords.... greg g Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 So it just a reversal of Yin and Yan............No if only the north and south pole would reverse. I hear they do every million years or so, would that make our system 6 v neg???? Quote
RobertKB Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I like your attitude Greg. Life is short and you gotta enjoy it. If the poles reverse and we go 6V negative our regulators will all need to be changed. Maybe we should invest in 6V negative ground regulators and make a fortune when that happens. OR NOT. Quote
RHDSP15C Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 LPG is the way to go. Right now it's the equivalent of US2.30 a US gallon. Engine oil doesn't get dirty, no carbon build up and very little wear. Valve seats need to be hardened so no problem for flatheads. Ignition leads need to be copper and ignition system kept in good shape. I have and old Valiant ute with 318 in my hangar that was converted to LPG and I'm sure it would bolt right on my SP15C. Right now I'm looking to replace my "manager's" car a 98 Fairlane Concorde. The best thing I found was the new Falcon with the E-gas engine with a $1400 option price tag. Cheaper to run by a whole lot without the misery of a 2 liter European or Jap diesel and cheaper to purchase. You can see this on the Ford au website. Quote
bob_amos Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Now I am truely pissed. This gas price thing has gotten us all. Today my wife and I decided that, in order to save a tank of gas a month, to not have lunch together any more. Weird you say? Well, we have eaten lunch together every day for the last 15 plus years. We really enjoy being together during our work day and this half hour was a real pleasure for both of us. Now, those greedy idiots that are running up the price of gas has stepped way over the line that was my personal limit. This greedy foolishness has got to stop..... Quote
bob_amos Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Let's hope that this is not just the normal "Lip service" that our wonderful leaders have given us for years and years... wouldn't it be nice if they would actually do something for the people of this nation as they were elected to do. Ficion is such a big part of the governments of the world and ours is the best at it. I'll believe they really want to help when I see it though. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted June 12, 2008 Author Report Posted June 12, 2008 Well the other day when I started this thread Cheveron down the street was 4.49 now it is 4.69 and no end in sight they say I guess the only thing that might stop this thing is world wide economic collapse I guess. Quote
1940plymouth Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 On March 6th I gassed up my Plymouth at 3.37.9 a gallon, yesterday I put has in her again at 4.22.9 a gallon. I have been driving it, but in order to do so at these prices, our two daily drivers sit, other than my wife driving ten miles round trip to work. Also she makes one trip a week to town to do her normal shopping. As she says, no more trips to go "Window Shopping" Quote
TodFitch Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 Well the other day when I started this thread Cheveron down the street was 4.49 now it is 4.69 and no end in sight they say I guess the only thing that might stop this thing is world wide economic collapse I guess. That is a scary thought. I personally don't think gas prices are going to go down: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil My guess is gas prices will stabilize at a point where alternative forms of energy are cost competitive with oil. Not sure how long that will take to happen as it depends on how fast oil prices increase, how stable those higher prices appear to investors (i.e. how safe it is to invest in alternatives) and how long it takes to develop and scale up alternatives. And to me "alternatives" don't mean things that take huge amounts of oil to produce and are only economically viable because of subsidies. In the meantime anyone living in a rural or semi-rural area where there are no alternatives to using a car is going to be hit a lot harder than those living in a dense suburban or urban area where alternative transportation exists. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted June 12, 2008 Author Report Posted June 12, 2008 Your right Tod many of us do not have options to ride share work from home or take public transportation. Our country is set up for the automobile, we do not have the mass transit system in place in most cities across the country to make that a viable option. Green technology is still years away for it to make much of a dent. Even if we start drilling everywhere today it would be a few years before it would be on the market. Quote
PatS.... Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 Maybe it's all a scam. Just think, the oil companies can now lower the price a LOT, and still be a LOT higher than when this madness started and we'll think were gettin a heck of a deal at the "new lowered price"!!! We're bein' had Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted June 12, 2008 Author Report Posted June 12, 2008 Bob, don't give up on lunches out with the wifey, those are worth it whatever the price! I loved having lunch with my wife back when I worked near her. Quote
Normspeed Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 This week Grandadeo and I are traveling all over the area in the Plymouth. We've been burning about a tankful a day. Sounds awful, but that's maybe $50-$60 a day, and split between the two of us, for a fun vacation expense, not all that bad. I think when I do my next open road trip I'll change from driving every day and stopping at night, to driving every 3rd or 4th day and taking time to enjoy wherever it is I've parked the teardrop. Gotta slow down and smell the roses. For commuting I'm lucky, I take a five mile drive to the station, then a 30 mile train ride to downtown L.A. each day. Subway is free with the monthly rail pass which costs $152. That's way cheaper than driving and a lot less stressful too. Quote
DutchEdwin Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 The Dutch price: gas, €1.55 / liter= $8.37 a gallon 10% up from January Robin, that's less then your place diesel €1.45/liter = $7.83 a gallon 40% up from January!!!!!! Because some %$#@&%$@#$# shuts down diesel production plants at a time where the trend is rising economics (= more diesel trucks on the road)rising sales on diesel cars and dropping gas cars. My luck....I drive a diesel but go by bicycle to work. Quote
