Normspeed Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Article about rising incidences of gasoline theft. http://www.knbc.com/news/15950867/detail.html?subid=10101581 Quote
1940plymouth Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 In our small town we have one combination gas and grocery store, a couple of weeks ago they had two individuals drive out at the pump without paying. Over a hundred dollars in gas. At that point the owners don't let anyone buy gas or diesel until they prepay, then the pumps shut off automatically once the desired amount is pumped. Quote
Alaska48 Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 All of our gas stations have been prepay for a few years now... just too much theft going around. Someone even broke into an old abandoned gas station in town a few weeks ago to try and get at the tanks but they were unsuccessful Quote
1940plymouth Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 shel bizzy 48 Question, Do you know where Ellenburg Depot is I see that you are from the northern part of the state so I thought I would ask. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 drive offs would never happen if we still had full service stations...too cheap to pay a teenager to be a pump jockey...wash windows..check tires etc..yeah I know ..it would drive the cost of gas up...so do your congress men when they think they have an answer or at minimum a need to know.. Quote
Alaska48 Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Speaking of teenagers pumping gas, if anyone is from or has been to Oregon they don't let you pump your own gas (its illegal!!!) and they have a dude out there that does it for you Quote
Niel Hoback Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 I think New Jersey also mandates a pump jockey. Quote
oldmopar Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Correct here in the Garden State (NJ) we have no self service and not only do they pump it for us but I think we also have some of the lower prices $ 3.39 last week for 87 octane and no inspections for classic cars (over 25 years). Quote
Captain Neon Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 I'm sorry, but I've never liked full service gas fill-ups. The fewer people poking around my cars the better. I'm actually of the opinion that gas stations manned by human beings are on the way out, esp. w/ most Wal*Marts being open 24-7. I hate when government mandates that all gasoline must be sold full-service. Believe me when I say that it has little to do with preventing drive-offs and more to do w/ the Teamsters Union and politcal back-scratching. If convenience stores didn't make so much money selling lottery tickets and cigarettes, they would have long ago knocked the building down and put in more pumps that can only be accessed by credit card only. I would gladly save a few more pennies a gallon to just pull up to a pump slide in my debit card and pump my gas. All other things being equal, a few more pumps can only be a good thing to reduce waiting. That's all I do now so I resent having to pay some flunkie to sit at a cash register to sell every one else their cigarettes and lottery tickets. In Minnesota, a couple of gas stations are doing just that. 24-hour gasoline, credit/debit card only, no attendant. A few others close the convenience store, but leave the pumps on as credit card only. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 $3.71 is what I paid for regular couple days ago in Seattle. Diesel $4.49. Quote
Normspeed Posted May 3, 2008 Author Report Posted May 3, 2008 Wow, memory lane. Back in the 70's I once spent some time camping near Chateaugay, in a little hidden river valley called the hogsback. To get to it you drove your car along an abandoned railroad right of way then hiked down a very steep hillside to a pristine little meadow next to a river. Beautiful! I do. I am actually quite some distance south of there. About 150 miles. My Grandmother was from the Burke/Chateaugay area, which is pretty much the same locale as Ellenburg Depot. It is just a short drive to Canada from there. Could probably even walk it. I have not been up that way in several years. Quote
1940plymouth Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Back in the middle 60's we use to hang out at either Barnes, or the Hollywood at Chateaugay Lake on Friday and Saturday nights. My Mother was raised in Chateaugay. Along time ago now. No driving the old Plymouth today, the fog is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Not a good weekend for Rhinebeck:( Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Well I don't know about you but I kind of like it when an attendent comes out and does a few things around your car. Especially cleaning oft the windshild! Full service boy that's a rare thing to find. Jon Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 I thought it would be just fun to reminisce about different services you could get when pulling into a full service gas station of years gone by. The one thing that stands out in my mind was the cheerful attitude the attendants would have-most of the time. Remember when you pulled into a Standard service station and the attendant had a white shirt on with blue pants. Oh yes and then there was the free gifts you could get if you bought enough gas. I worked at a full service gas station when I was a teenager and have alot of memories of working with the public. Jon Quote
John Mulders Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 with the current gas prices...gifts would be at any purchase. John Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 I like the old full service stations too. In fact we had two of them close by me, an AMOCO and a Citgo. Also have both named stations that are actually closer to me that were convenience stores and self service gas. However, I always went out my way to take my business to the independently owned full service station, even though I pumped my own gas. They both sold out to the corp. levels though in the past two years and now they are the self service convenience store type. Don't use either one of them anymore. Use to be nice to buy my gas at the AMOCO. The owners sons were into midget racing and were always working on their cars in the garage. Was nice to be able to talk to people who actually knew a little about cars, rather than just collecting money for gas. Any idiot can collect money for gas or run a station that only takes credit cards at the pump. Takes real people with a head on their shoulders to run a real service station. Two thirds of the clerks at a convenience store gas station can't even add or subtract without an adding machine or cash register. Both owners opened up auto service shops nearby after selling out the stations, which tells me they were forced to sell the gas portion of their business. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Norm, wanna have fun? Go pump $18.64 in gas and give the clerk $20 and 4 cents:D Shel, that was exactly my point. Quote
PatS.... Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 We have a few discount stations where you can get cheaper gas that are "full serve". Be nice if they could speak or understand english. They treat you like scum as well. Don't go to them at all cheap gas or not. Quote
