bigred48 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I recently noticed that my rear end was leaking around the pinon and around the housing. I am going to need to pull it apart to fix these problems and while it is apart i was thinking that mabye I should swap the gears to a 3.73 or so, I dont have an overdrive and im looking for a more relaxed highway speed. Where can I get gears to put in this thing? or do i have to swap the whole rear end with something newer? What is an easier approach? Thanks any and all help (or just comments) is appreiciated, I love the forum and all that it does. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I swapped my p15 to a 3.73. Pretty straight forward job as long as you get an older 3.73 with the same axle count. I didn't (found this out the hard way) and had to swap the side gears between the 2 diff units. I of course put a new diff gasket and pinion seal on at the same time. To me this is the easier route to go if you can find the 3.73 diff. Also 3.54s were available but I've never seen one. If you can't find a diff you are stuck with a modern rear end swap. Quote
greg g Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Your leak may be related to the differential vent being clogged. There is a little fitting on top of the three way fitting where the brake fluid line splits. You should be be able to wiggle the top of that fitting around. If it is cloged that diffy will presurize with heat and lube past the seals. With the breather open it releases this pressure. The newer lower numerically gears have a different spline count there fore you older axles do not match up. As stated you need to get the side gear that match your axle spline count or you need to change your axles also. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 If you are going with the 3.73 your best bet is as stated..swap the entire hog head..you do not have to worry about back lash etc...be quick in and out..well, quicker than building one.. Quote
bigred48 Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 what kind of modern rear end would fit a 48 sedan best? what should i be looking for? Quote
