This winter's project was to go through the whole fuel system from tank to carb. Saturday, I finally got the new fuel lines finished and decided I would start the car up and then check for leaks.

I go to put the key in the ignition and there is a piece of tape over the keyhole with a label that said "oil gauge".

I looked at that and remembered that back in November when I took things apart, I removed the gauge cluster that contains the fuel gauge, ammeter, water temp meter and oil pressure gauge. When I did that I thought to myself..."I'm just stupid enough to forget to put the gauge cluster back in before I start the car and oil will come shooting out the tube spraying the inside of my car."

Sure enough, 5 months later I'm trying to start up the car with the gauge cluster still sitting on the work bench:eek:

So, like I said, I'm pretty smart to realize just how dumb I am!

I would have put the key somewhere..somewhere I could not find it and then in a moment of frustration of not finding the key...hot wire it and shoot oil everywhere..actually I am a compulsive list maker with thing to cross as I go...

Glad your face is free from oil... I know your way smarter than me I would have never taped the ignition....I would have tried to turn the car on twice or maybe three times before I figure there's oil everywhere...:D I'm a little S L o w. :D

The bad news is, I think you have early-onset Alzheimers. The good news is, you'll never know it. :D

When I was just out of the Navy, my first job was working in an International Harvester plant making class 8 trucks. One of my first jobs was cleaning out the cab of a unit that had two problems. The first was that the engine ran away when they first fired it, and the emergency shutdown wasn't hooked up. That would have been bad enough, the the oil pressure gauge hose was disconnected under the dash! Boy, was that a mess!

The IH plant in Fort Wayne was a flea market after it closed. I have not checked it out on my last few trips there so not sure if it is still standing.
