My commute car is a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback that is lowered slightly with stiffer springs and shocks, front and rear sway bars, 4 wheel disc brakes with the fronts a larger brake out of an Integra, and a stock drivetrain. It gives me a car that handles and stops superbly, and still gets 35 MPG. I only have to fill it up twice a month.

Chrysler cars have NEVER been promoted and never used by Chevy and Ford in comparisons either in their ads...it is some sort of compriacy..people ask me what I was going to do if Chrylser went under, belly up no more cars..I reply, the question is what are you going to as I already have the better car...

Or, it could be that the marketing people believe in a golden rule I and other sales people have been taught. Never advertise the competitors product. If you compare your product to your competitors product, you are actually giving that competitor free advertising in the process. It's best to sell your product on it's own merits. If you tell the customer to compare, he may get a hot shot sales person when he looks at the competitors product and then be talked into buying it instead of yours. When a customer ask me about a competitors product, I simply say, don't know, we don't make that product, even though I may know the differences, if any. Even if I know the competitors is junk, I won't tell the customer that.

As for already having the better car even if Chrysler goes belly up. Well........Packard and Hudson were great cars too. Don't see many of them around though. Why? It's too hard to find parts because the company went belly up. So, what good is it to have a better car when you can't get parts to keep it on the road?

Norm...I never considered the comparison as advertising the other mans product but will give you credit in the fact that it does..only that if you have the better product yu will compare..ie why Dodge is never lined up against the Ford or Chevy

As for advertising...the ole "signature cut" is something that I do not like at all..that be the dealership name on the car be it a decal or license tag..they don't pay me a fee so I will not have it on the car...

Tim, actually most of the time a company will use comparisons to the competitors product. I've always done that, only without actually saying this is better than XYZ companies product. It's done by actually learning all about the competitors product, then instead of naming the competitor's product you just point out the things that make your product stand over his in the presentation. That way you are always talking about your product and no one else's.

As for those dealer names on the trunks, etc. I agree with you 100%. For the past couple of cars I bought, I simply didn't care. (Guess I'm mellowing with age.:) ) However, in my younger days I would tell the dealer to either leave that off the car, or remove it unless they wanted to pay me for advertising. One dealer in the 80's put the tag on anyway. When delivery day came up, I looked and saw the tag and refused delivery until they removed it. Dealer wasn't happy about it, but did remove the tag. They even went so far as to say it would ruin the paint if they removed it. Told them that wasn't my problem and if it was ruined they would have to repaint the car.:)

Got off topic with Tim, but here's what I drive.

48 Plymouth Coupe

95 Chevy Lumina APV (my daily vehicle)

02 Kia Spectra GSX (wifes daily vehicle)

I also use to own a motorcycle until the late 80's. Quit riding bikes because my arthritis would flare up without warning. So, gave it up for health reasons. Figured smoking was safer than riding.:)

I thought I was the only one that pulled that sort of stuff...the dealer that sold us our...I mean, my wife's Fusion had an ugly decal put on the decklid...I told my wife that we wouldn't accept it unless it was removed.

They did...and went on to give us 'complimentary' license plate frames emblazoned with the dealer name, phone #, and logo (These are illegal in Texas BTW). I didn't notice them until we got home, so I pulled them off, broke them into tiny bits, and mailed them back with a friendly letter informing them that their frames violated TX law. :D

Those dealers sure are generous, giving you free license frames and all.....

The dealers did finally modify their frames in Missouri to allow the date

numbers on the tag to show, per the law.

When I bought the Caravan last February, it did not have a dealer sticker

on it, but I knew they would want to affix one before I picked it up. So

I simply told the salesman I did not want one.....that I was happy with

their services and would personally tell others about them.

Of course, I would like to HAVE a license topper for the local dealership

that sold Plymouths in 1947. Have only seen one such item in my

travels.....and it was not for sale. It is in the trunk of a 1955 Plymouth

with only 23,000 original miles.
