Directional signal indicator on dash

I remember a while back, on the old board, someone had posted a pic of the high beam indicator that goes on the dashboard, but this one had arrows on both sides serving as indicators for the right and left directional signal. I was searching for the post, but nothing was turning up in the archives.

Does anyone remember that post? Was that an optional item on P15's or did it go on the Dodges, DeSotos or Chryslers instead?

All 4 makes had one with the non plymouth ones slightly different. I have one off a dodge that someone on here told me with some slight filing will fit my dash. Hope its true :)

Man, I'd sure like to find one of those, and also the stearing column directional unit that went with it.

Keep looking they are around. I've collected mine from I think 5 different places to get all the pieces. Hopefully have it all now for when I rewire.

1946 Chryslers used arrows on each side of the instrument cluster for turn signal indicators. High beam indicator at top of dash. 1947 to 1948 then went to the single green round indicator at one side of cluster for turn signal indicator with high beam red round indicator on opposite side of cluster.

That's interesting, Bob. I merely want one because I forget to turn mine off. Either get that or a directional signal that automatically shuts off. I think the high beam/directional indicator would be keener. =)

Here is a photo of the high beam/directional indicator from my 48 Dodge. It secures the speedometer into the dash at the top.

the unit is cast..some are painted..some are chromed...the dodge has the built in indicators..the angle of the Plymouth in comparrison with the Dodge is much greater..the unit will need a small sliver of a wedge shape cut out and the head rolled back to adapt to a P15. This will then require a skilled hand at welding for real strength...else it will be expoxy and kid glove on the install..this device is the top mount for the speedo..the other two mounts are at the 5 and 7 position..this is whay it needs be welded if possible for the speedo is quite heavy and should be secured at the top.

I installed a Dodge indicator/high beam piece in my '41 Plymouth. The angle of the high beam light tube is different and I cut it off, filed the correct angle on the tube and then used JB Weld to re-attach it. Worked well. I have never seen a Plymouth piece for sale and only found the Dodge one after years of looking. There is also a bracket that holds the turn signal indicator light units and you will need those parts.

Jim thats the one piece I am still missing for mine. I may just end up making it. To answer Darins earlier question here are the pieces I got.

the turn signal assembly for the column

turn signal knob and handle(would normally come with the assembly but mine was missing)

the canceling ring that attaches to the bottom of the steering wheel

and then the indicator/high beam light which like Jim I have the dodge version. So 4 different things I got to get an almost complete unit. Still no bracket that holds the 2 extra light bulbs for the signal indicators.

My setup is installed so unfortunately I can't post a picture but the bracket would be pretty easy to fabricate. It is just a flat piece of metal with a U shaped bend in the middle. There is a hole in the valley of the U that the highbeam tube bolts to. Then there are holes in either end to hold the press-in turn signal light indicators. Mine have covers on them to concentrate the light beams but I think regular dash light sockets would work.

Here's the Parts Manual pic of the standard high beam indicator for a P15.

Somewhere, I can't find it right now, I have a pic of the one with arrows and three sockets. I think maybe it came from David Maxwell.

...with an indicator with two arrows to replace the standard unit. I have been looking for one myself for years. Saw one sell on ebay once for some incredible price. The only one I've ever seen in person belongs to our esteemed forum host, Gerald Koldjeski. I too have been toying with the idea of making my own. I plan on using a standard bezel and machining out the area for the arrows. I would then have to create my own bracket for the additional lamps required. The attached photo is a copy of a brochure for the directionaly assembly. In the image which the URL below will link you to, you can faintly make out the bezel with the arrows on the dash.
