GTfastbacker
After many years of hibernation, our '41 Dodge is starting to squeak everywhere. And that's despite the fact that I've spent days jumping around the car with a grease gun and oil can... lol Squeaking #1 Water pump. A bit of oil didn't help anything, I think it needs to be replaced? It's a model without a grease nipple, so it's newer. The engine is a P18, but I can't find a replacement? Can it be repaired? Squeaking #2 Alternator, I've bought repair set and think it will soon work without any noise Squeaking #3 Speedometer At first I thought the speedometer cable was squeaking and I oiled it lightly, but it didn't get any better. So I took the speedometer cable off and it went quiet. So the speedometer is squeaking. What can I do myself or should I send the speedometer to a specialist? Thank you Joe
soth122003
There should be a little oil port wick on the top of the speedometer. A lite 10w weight oil should do the trick. Here are some pics of what it might look like. They are also a bite in the a** to see and lube with out making a small mess. A mirror and a small applicator bottle will help a lot. Also note that the port is on the top as to let the oil gradually drip in the pinion workings of the speedometer. andyd
Re the water pump........it maybe the fan belt..........try this........get an old cake of soap.....rub it against the angled/bevelled edges of the fan belt in a few accessible places before starting the engine.......if its coming from a "dry" fan belt the noise should stop......here in Australia I can also buy a spray can of belt lube which does the same job as the soap...........if the noise is still there then, yep, its probably the water pump.......andyd Edited July 29 by andyd 1
Dan Hiebert
I'll also suggest that the squeaking alternator and water pump may be the belt, since the car was sitting for so long. They make stethoscopes for mechanical use that would help narrow down the source of engine noise. A much less expensive alternative is to use a piece of garden hose, hold one end to your ear, move the other around the suspected noise locations. I keep a short piece handy for such adventures - handy tip - blow the spiders out before you use it. Joe Lee i took my endoscopy camera, the pipe is gone but the small hole is still there. used a syringe with long curved injection needle to put 2-3 drops if oil in the hole. noise has gone.
