OUTFXD
Fighting with the distributor again. Under DonaldSmith's suggestion tried setting timing by Continuity. Broke out the old MultipulDigitReader, Set it for continuity, started messing with the distributor. Getting inconsistent readings. pressed the leads together to check the MDR was working. "Beeeeep" Check against the dist, nothing. Put BOTH leads against the head, nothing. Both leads against the block, nothing. Went out of my way to find Bare metal ( In this case the casting stamp on the block), nothing. Now, I may be having a mentally foggy day, But I am pretty sure that I should be getting continuity on a single piece of cast iron! What in tarnation is going on? Suggestions on what would cause this? Could this be the root cause of all my electrical issues? HELP!
Ivan_B
The meter does not produce enough current to fight the resistance of oxidation/burnt oil film/old pain, and other things you might have under the hood. I had problems checking the older solder joints in my radio because some of them were dirty with flux. Check it on a modern random piece of wire, if it beeps - you are good to go. To check the car parts, you might want to clean your test contact places with a tiny metal brush, or just scrape them a little with the leads themselves, if you don't mind ? BTW, if you switch it to the resistance check, chances are, you will see some digits at places where you have no beep (when you are supposed to).
SteveR
Don't always rely upon the Beeep the resistance may be too high for it to beep. Do as Ivan said and use the resistance setting

kencombs
My hearing is so bad I never use the beep, just set the dial on the lowest ohm setting and watch the meter. More info to learn that way anyway.

Hearing Aids help but... My wife often says in the morning, "Oh listen to the birds, how nice." I usually respond with, "What birds!?"
