wills 51 Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Has anybody used this stuff on a gas tank and how well does it hold up? I have a small leak where the fuel line goes in on my 50 desoto ..... Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 I have not personally used a cold weld to fix a gas tank leak, but know people who have. Myuncle has done small leak repairs with J B Weld, then he would go over the JB with metal to metal filler, he said it sealed up the leak. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Hopefully others will chime in, you could also remove the tank, good opportunity to clean it up and then have the leak soldered in a shop..................good luck Fred Quote
Tony Cipponeri Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 I used it a few different times on cement mixers, works great on them, I think they vibrate more then in a car. Tony C Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 I had an occasion to use this as described...I had a hole in the tank..someone wanted some gasoline..I cleaned the area real well..placed a layer of JB, then screwed a self tapping screw with a large enough body to fit the hole..the screw had a large washer that was also coated in JG weld..tightened it up..placed a small coat of JB to smooth it all over..never dripped a drop.. builtfercomfort Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 In an old Corvair, gas tank in the front, I drove over an ice pile getting into a parking space lot and creased the tank - leaked out most of my gas overnight. JB weld fixed it (even while dripping gas) and held up for the next two years. (that's when I junked the car, gas tank still ok) Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 I have heard that JB weld works well on Corvair radiators too:cool: Quote
Tony Cipponeri Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 Don, I heard somewhere that those Corvair radiators, never did leak! Tony C Quote
bigred48 Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 My girlfreinds dad fixed her transmission with jb weld. There was a hole in the bottom of the case, so he pulled it and filled it with jb weld, it has held for 5+ years without any problems. Quote
wilmot andy Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 I cleaned out my tank, and found it had a few pinholes. I used my welder to fill them(cleaned the heck out of the tank, flushed filled etc) and covered them with a little JB. Looks good and held up. I don't think the welding was needed, JB would have been sufficient. My tank on my International was chemically dipped, and had two pinholes. I used redcoat on the inside, no leaks either. Quote
Normspeed Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 My tank had a little seepage up on the left side. I made sure the fuel level was low, lightly sanded the area and wiped with lacquer thinner, put on a film of JB and no more leaks. Best to let it cure 24 hours before using. Quote
