looking at the picture, while you cannot say HOW thick, it is obvious by the shadow of the base gasket it is thicker than the other other gaskets, not the slots in the gasket, no manner the position of install the vacuum will be applied to the base of the carb..

Yeah we used the one supplied with with rebuild kit, iirc it wasn't thin and papery like the the black ones for the carb. You can see the marks of it on the intake and bottom of the Stromberg

In the carter normal intake vacuum holds the jet closed against a spring. As vacuum drops to climb grades, accelerate, etc the spring opens a metering needle, enriching the mix after the initial squirt from the acc pump.  The valve in responding to the vacuum is nearly real time reaction to load.  So if your engine is pulling poor vacuum gauge readings, this circuit can not operate correctly.  Optimum steady vacuum at 500 rpm idle should be 20 to 21 inches of mercury.

My dual carb intake came with paper gaskets that did have the cut outs, but would have greatly reduced vacuum signal to carb.

Thanks a ton! I'll check out what's on it, and measure thickness. These are 1.99 on amazon so may just pick up some spares anyway
