Going to start putting my 3-speed manual transmission back together, (finally rounded up all the parts). I have the end play specs for the countershaft and second speed gear, but am looking for the specs for the input pinion. Adjusted by the thickness of gaskets on bearing retainer. I've looked in all my shop manuals, Clymer, Motors and factory ones. Cant find it. If anyone has that measurement, please let me know. Thanx

This is from my P15 shop manual. Be sure to use grommets/o-rings on the three bolts and a 3/4” soft plug or a penny to seal the shift rail. 42 on the picture. Rick D.

Thanks 9 Foot Box, that's exactly what I was looking for. Any chance that you could post pictures of the rest of the pages of your shop manual on the transmission rebuild? Seems like yours has other information that mine do not. Thank-you

There is no end play spec or adjustment for the input shaft.

The book only states how to come up with a gasket that will be thick enough to crush .005" for a good seal under the bearing retainer.

The MoPar transmission gasket sets usually included two or three different thicknesses of  retainer gaskets.

No way that the output shaft could bottom out inside input shaft?

No worries at all... as long as all three bearings are correct, installed.properly, not worn out and the e-brake drum nut properly tightened.

And even then I doubt the mainshaft would bottom out in the input shaft.

The shop book .005" has nothing to do with mainshaft to input shaft bottoming out clearance.

If my memory is correct, the input shafts location is determined solely by the outer snap ring on the bearing.   The .005 is just a way to select a gasket for correct crush and sealing.

Good to know, thanx. Have new bearings and both shafts are new. Just don't want to get it all back together and installed just to have it pile up when it gets hot. Had to rebuild because countershaft had broken tooth on first gear.

Just overthinking things again, I guess

Better to think things thru now rather than mess up your transmission assuming things.
