Removing the rear axle inner seal

Recommended Posts

Axles are out of my 51 Cambridge and I'm trying to figure how to get the inner seals out. I'm thinking a slide hammer with a hooked end should work. Is this correct? The service manual says to remove it with puller C-748, and I certainly don't have one of those.

Thanks.

I am sure someone will usefully brag about how they have one.  Some of us weren't around when they were being made, lol.

Your idea of a slide hammer with an attachment should work.

That made me laugh  :) Awhile back I bought a tool box from a estate sale & this was in it.

Sure it is a seal puller & has a wooden slide handle .... thought it was cool. No idea what model number it is.

I'm certain I would reach for my slide hammer if I want to pull a seal though.

I have this kit. Very handy. Easily pulled the axle seals out.

A very handy kit indeed, & not real expensive. I have a similar  kit I bought in hopes to pull dents with. ..... weld wire to the dent then use slide hammer to connect to the wire to pull. ..... They will easily pull a seal.

A quick google search shows pry bars as pullers ..... reminds me of using a carpenters claw hammer as a kid to pull them. Use the claw just like you were pulling a nail.

I have a seal puller like that.  It works for timing chain covers and others with the seal not set deep inside something, like an inner axle seal is.

Here is a picture of the Miller factory tool that I own that is used to pull the  inner axle seal. Look at the picture inthye upper right corner. This tool goes back to the early 1930's. Note that there a three fingers that will grip the inner seal and the use the nut to pull the seal out of the axle hosuing. We have used this tool to replace the inner seal on my 39 Desoto

That is a nice kit. Is the hammer a 5 pounder?

I can tell you not to use a cheap seal puller from harbor freight, when the little tip breaks off it's moving 3 times the speed of light and will embed itself in your arm.

Btw, the cheapie slide hammer from hf works great. However, if you happen to have an arm injury it's a little painful to use...

Despite the potential for personal injury, I think I'm going to buy the HF slide hammer and try my luck.
