Marty C Posted January 12, 2022 Report Posted January 12, 2022 My engine is at the shop being overhauled and the technician found the oil pump bypass tube missing . It’s the tube opposite the pick up tube and screen. What is the function of this tube; do I need it; where can I find or make one? any help would be appreciated Quote
belvedere Posted January 13, 2022 Report Posted January 13, 2022 I think Vintage Power Wagons sells them. 1 Quote
Sniper Posted January 13, 2022 Report Posted January 13, 2022 If the engine was running when you took it out to go to the shop an it had oil pressure, then they mislaid it. It transports the oil from the pump output to the engine's oiling passageways. Without it you have no oil to the engine and it will self destruct fairly quickly. 3 Quote
Marty C Posted January 13, 2022 Author Report Posted January 13, 2022 Sniper, Bought the car as a car from a lady that said the engine ran before it was parked but I never got it running that’s why it’s in the overhaul shop ? Quote
Sniper Posted January 13, 2022 Report Posted January 13, 2022 Well, odds are the tube was there. I take they dd the disassembly? Quote
Andydodge Posted January 13, 2022 Report Posted January 13, 2022 Marty.....there is no way that the engine would run for more than a few minutes, if that, without that bypass tube.........was the engine running allbeit not well before the shop got i?.........who took the engine apart?........sounds like the shop lost it..........lol..........andyd. Marty C Posted January 13, 2022 Author Report Posted January 13, 2022 No I bought the car from someone who was in the middle of restoring it and that guy died. She said the engine was running but I could tell it never was run because the sparklers were new never fired everything was fresh gaskets was fresh silicone on them and I tried getting it going for two months and there was no compression so I’m glad I didn’t get it running so I pulled the engine and took it to the shop when they took it apart they found that tube missing along with a lot of other issues inside the engine. Marty C Posted January 13, 2022 Author Report Posted January 13, 2022 Lol Sparklers voice to text. Spark plugs were new everything looked fresh on the outside but I pulled the head and I could tell it was a half assed restoration job the guy who passed away’s wife said it ran I bought it as is at a lower price because the some of the ignition wiring was ripped out . I rewired the ignition I had guess the car was OK the timing was fine I had spark the engine would not start I did a compression test and compression was extremely low so that’s when I knew I had to pull the engine Quote
Marty C Posted January 13, 2022 Author Report Posted January 13, 2022 I wasn’t able to get a picture of the missing tube because by the time the technician had flipped over the engine Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 FWIW, I heard recently that the oil tube can be installed two ways, right and wrong. If wrong, a crankshaft throw hits the tube and makes a mystery knocking noise. The guy I spoke to went nuts until he figured it out. I haven't checked this personally but figured I'd put the info out. 1 Quote
keithb7 Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 (edited) I seem to recall reading some where. Twist the oil screen , straight part of the pick up tube until it points diagonally toward the main bearing cap at the farthest end. You think I can find that info now? I cannot.
