72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 Getting a substantial oil leak coming out of the draft tube in a p15,any ideas? Quote
greg g Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 Has your oil been diluted by gas? Does it smell gassy? How is your compression, is the breather cap flowing air? Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 No gas,running 80 ,85,87 on 1,2,3. Quote
greg g Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 Your compression is kind of low, should be around 100. So would suspect worn rings causing more crankcase pressure than normal. Watch your oil level if it gets down to add, run it till it below add and see if that changes the quantity of flow. My dad ran his dodge flatheads at the add mark. Thar seemed to relieve a lot of leaking from various places. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 was the tube removed at one time and the diffusing material maybe removed (filtering material) 1 Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 There is nothing in the tube. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 this material if in place is where it bolts to the block...if you have inspected this area and it is missing....you may have found part of the problem...the engine vents contaminants through the mesh...allow vapors to pass but hold back on liquids. 1 Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 So what is the material made from? Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 Does the material go in the block or in the part of the tube that insert in the block? Quote
John Reddie Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 I believe that the breather material is a fine wire mesh. Also check your oil filler cap as that is part of the crankcase breather system and can cause problems if the mesh in it becomes clogged. Good luck. John R Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 the material is your call....many have reported good results with the metal pot scrubbers both copper and stainless 1 Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 I use those in copper for cleaning soldering tips.Installing now in tube where it enters block. We will see?! Quote
greg g Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 Stainless steel, copper or brass pot and pan scrubber will work fine. Get the skinniest strands you can find. Pack it in in 5he round spot the bolt goes through. Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 Got it Greg, just did an around the block, cardboard under it ,no breather cap. Waiting for the results now. Quote
72morph Posted August 23, 2021 Author Report Posted August 23, 2021 Hey y'all that worked! Many thanks for the replies.Just two more little pee pee drops now not from draft tube.Gaskets for side covers and pan arriving this week.On to the pee pee leaks. Draft tube was major mess. 1 Quote
greg g Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Don't over tighten the side covers. They use the thumb screws to keep you from bending the covers . Leave the pliers and channel locks in the tool box! Do check them while they are off. A little tinkering with a light hammer and good sized drift can help improve their sealing abilities. Andydodge Posted August 24, 2021 Report Posted August 24, 2021 Also suggest a thorough cleaning of the side covers, then I'd use a wipe of contact adhesive to glue the cork gaskets to the covers which will help to ensure that the gaskets stay where they should when the covers are attached..........andyd 1 Quote
