Nomad50 Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 I need to remove the steering column from a 1947 Desoto. The manual says it needs to come out from underneath the car. Will a floor jack get the front end high enough to remove it? I don't want it to get stuck in my garage. Quote
RobertKB Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 Floor jack likely not enough. Look at the angle the column is at and then the length of the column. It’s got to be up pretty high. Also you nee to remove steering wheel and tie rod ends. No need to remove the steering column support with shifting mechanism. Assuming you only want steering box and shaft. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 If anything like my Plymouth, with the steering wheel off, the floor panel removed....I would think it would be ok as is...I recall no issues. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 as an added my seat was also out of that car at the time...big big help.... Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 I pulled the steering box and shaft out from under my D25 (like a P15) after raising the front end about a foot. But please use the floor jack only to lift the car, and put sturdy supports under the frame or front wheels before you crawl under. As Robert says, the steering column tube can stay in place (detach the bracket under the dash) and the pitman arm and steering wheel. My pitman arm took some doing to remove — impact wrench on the nut and specialized puller on the arm. Quote

Dan Hiebert Posted April 24, 2021 Report Posted April 24, 2021 I've had the steering column out of our D24 several times. Each was by using a floor jack (and stands). The higher you can get that front end, the better, but a floor jack was always tall enough for me. Quote
