RobertKB Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Looks like a Chrysler speedo and gauges. I sure do enjoy the junk yard pictures you post!! Please keep posting them! Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Few places I enjoy more than junk yards. We are living vicariously thru you when your out there shel! Thanks for the pics! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 When I happen to get around a group of junk old cars, I try to look for photo subjects like Shel finds. Usually the trunks and other areas are crammed full of a bunch of assorted nondescript stuff. Nothing artistic. So, I enjoy Shel's camera work when he posts it. Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Hi Shel! What is that exactly? - Just a face attached on a steering post and a pointer arrow on the 3 speed manual gear lever? Could my D24 be converted to "Fluid-o-matic" by adding this fancy accessoir? COOOOOL !!! Quote
Young Ed Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Bob following Shels example I've started opening trunks too. In one yard I did find some wide stainless trim rings in the trunk of a 49. Then I opened the next one and it was full of old toilets! I couldn't bring myself to take a picture of that. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 It's a 1950 or 51 Chrysler automatic transmission selector. Are your gears in the same place? Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Not sure how that setup works. Just looked interesting compared to the PRNDL that would normally appear there. Well, for my part your photo is all I ever seen of "fluid-o-matic"... ...Just thought, that reverse and 2nd (R/Lo) are on the top of the three speed schema, neutral in between and 3rd (Dr) down under... Could it be just a dial added on a basic three speed manual? Stylish set, anyway. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 The 54 Plymouth I bought recently has the Powerflite automatic transmission, and a clear plastic selector on the column. I think it is Rev, Neut, Drv, Low--they did not have Park in those days. Had to use the emergency brake. Those old Chryslers and others had either an automatic, or semi-automatic transmission. Quote
greg g Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Shel's picture shows the Clunk o matic shift quadrant for the M6 trans by any of its various names, tip toe, fluid torque drive, or gyromatic. Reverse is reverse, selecting low give you the dual range low gears good t a whopping 18 mph, and selecting hi gives you the high side two gears, good for about 18 mph in the lower gear, and then to whatever speed your heart would stand. As shown, the trans was shifted to neutral and the parking brake put o when the car was parked, and when starting. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 (edited) I got the 54 Plymouth Savoy with the auto also... Edited May 20, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 I found a better pic of my gear selector......just like Tim's..... And you can see that Tim's tail lights are definitely a different animal than the regular 54 unit. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 (edited) Bob..cannot see the pic..but in regard to the taillight..the 54 and 53 are different..however quick glance at a 53 with factory backup lights could be confusing. The 53 without the back up lens is pointed at the top and squared at the bottom and solid red..even the half lens for the back up is this way (squared bottom where it connects to the back up lens) with the back up light portion basically square...the 54 does have a round section molded into the lower part of the bezel for the backup housing..this shape is there with or without backup lights..you just get dummy lenses if not equipted with backup lights...keep in mind that the 54 is cast to protude from the body and hense a larger bezel, same thing was done for the headlight to give the car a longer look....these bezels will show salt and pepper on the chrome finish while 53 bezels are less pronounced and less surface area will not be as harsh looking over the years...this may be the reason some 54 cars having them affixed. As for the trunk, the pushbutton is defining for the 54...should have a stainless bezel around it..sure dress the car nicely..I cannot find any literature saying the 53 lenses were carried over even for a few early production unit..but then again there is nothing they says they did not...am not an expert...I have searched high and low for 54 data since getting my car...again..the 54 was brought into a "higher price" look based on the original 53 body which did not fare well in the sales records..lot and lots of trim changes was the path taken to make the car more appealing to the public...also the 1955 two tones were introduced in the late part of the 54 production run to further boost sales..was a rough period for the Plymouth as it slid to 5th position...also notice the trim on the tail end of the fender top..the 54 is cast chrome plate whereas the 53 is very low and stainless ... B&W is the 54 53 and then 53 with reverse light Robert King-Brown will know the source but my fins are a tad different (by choice) I have both set style but to be different I went with these..
